Canmore Museum One community, Many stories. Welcome to the Canmore Museum! Our mission is to ignite shared experiences and unexpected connections.

Known as Chuwapchipchiyan Kudi Bi by the Stoney Nakoda, Canmore is defined by the rugged Canadian Rocky Mountain landscape that surrounds us and shaped by the culture, language and traditions of those that have called this place home for over 10,000 years. Located in the heart of our charming and historic downtown, the Canmore Museum and the NWMP Barracks Provincial Historic Site’s collections, pr

ograms and exhibitions provide numerous opportunities to explore and experience our mountain landscapes, culture and community. As a community museum re-imagined for the 21st century, the purpose of the Canmore Museum is to build community, build a shared understanding of place, to build community memory, and to build a lasting legacy of community, environmental and organizational sustainability. To do this, we find, spark, preserve, and trade stories, ideas, and elements of creativity drawn from people in Canmore and the Bow Valley. We bring people together around art, history, place and culture to build a stronger, more connected community.

Exceptionally, the NWRCMP Barracks will be closed this Wednesday August 12th until Friday August 14th. The garden remains open to the public and the Barrack's doors open at 10 AM Saturday August 15th.

Step into 13,000 years of movement, connection, and story in the Bow Valley.

We're excited to announce our new exhibition, Footsteps Through Time: Human Journeys on the Land.

This exhibit traces the story of human journeys in the Bow Valley from the retreat of massive ice sheets that first opened travel routes, to the enduring seasonal movements of Indigenous Peoples. Through interactive displays, archaeological findings, and Indigenous ways of knowing, the exhibition reveals a layered and ongoing story of connection across time, distance, and cultures.

Join us for the opening reception of this immersive exhibition on May 15th at 6:30pm. The evening will feature a special talk by archaeologist Christina Clavelle Meyer, who supported the curation of the exhibition. Drawing on her expertise and behind-the-scenes involvement, Christina will share insights archaeological evidence, research processes, and interpretive decisions that helped bring this exhibition to life - offering a deeper perspective on how we understand human presence and movement on this land over thousands of years.
