Renaissance poetry and art transformed Arcadia into a metaphorical “garden” of pastoral innocence, peace, and relishing of simple pleasures. A quick search of the word for modern meaning gives us a tiny bit of insight into John Ross’ deep grasp on the paradox that we all live in our relationship with the natural world. “An enterprise-focused energy intelligence and utility data platform”.

“His work occupies a space between the personal and the universal, drawing on lived experience, art historical inheritance, and a dual attentiveness to spiritual and scientific thought. Here, the works exist in a structural condition, one in which time, perception, and recollection remain perpetually in flux.” As we have entered full tourist season, it has been wonderful to watch visitors engage with the work of Vick Naresh . They move toward the work for its sheer beauty, but seem to instinctively respond to its purpose. It is an unexpected pause in all of this ‘holiday ing’!

We are headed into our final week of this western whimsy extravaganza of an exhibition, “What in Tarnation?!” The individual remaining works by Casey Joseph McGlynn , Gary McMillan Michael Cameron and Pascale Ouellet will mix and mingle in the gallery rehang, but the experience of seeing it altogether is worth a drive this week! It’s really good. This piece by Casey Joseph McGlynn is titled. “A Horse with Very Personal Tattoos”.

(with overwhelming enthusiasm) we are welcoming to the Elevation Gallery roster, Hamilton based painter Vick Naresh. Superimposing organic imagery on pattern, metaphor on reckoning, and modernity on nostalgia, Vick hones his voice through the act of painting. Hinting at his lived experience within the rich color and pattern, the artist shares the implication of time and place while leaving room for the viewer to filter their own experiences into the work. With early career artists, we tend to encourage painting in series for awhile: filling out a concept and honing skills through refining ex*****on of an idea. But as these artists move deep into mid-career, as is the case with .ouellet.art , I embrace the pieces between series….the oddities, the breath of air when this artist can explore something completely new without the pressure of ‘where will this lead?’. For many years and in our many locales, we added ‘weddings’ to our insane list of responsibilities. I have counted more than 500 events designed and produced by Elevation Gallery over 30 years. It largely grew out of guilt at building such beautiful spaces that were only being shared with the exclusivity of art, artists and art-lovers. When looking back, I celebrate the joy that we brought to these larger groups, the beauty that we created (yup, we did all of those tablescapes and flowers ourselves!). Do I miss it? HELL NO! I’m a better gallerist and human being for never touching another flower again! But it was pretty.

One of the delights of my 30 year tenure in this business has been those moments when I get to reflect on my longest relationships with artists. Last night, I happened across an image from 2008 of a piece by . Year by year, I’ve witnessed her rigorous and determined practice to mature as a painter….particularly as an elemental landscape painter. I’ve never invoked the relative comparison images, but tonight I must! Flip to the 2008 image, then back to today. It is staggering how capable she has become….all commercial affectations have dropped away, and the idiosyncrasy of her mark-making is unapologetic.
