The subject of "Destination Paradise" is rendered with the emotional depth that distinguishes Kitty Cantrell's finest work.

The sculpture goes beyond mere representation to suggest the animal's essential nature - its way of being in the world.

Each Cantrell sculpture represents a meditation on the beauty and mystery of the wild, rendered with the precision of a naturalist and the sensitivity of a poet. Her work speaks to collectors who recognize that true artistry lies not in technical skill alone but in the capacity to evoke genuine feeling.

Norval Morrisseau’s “Protection” silk screen brings his iconic visual language to a wider audience while preserving the strong outlines, flat colour and bold spirit that define his work.

A central figure shelters a gathering of birds, echoing Morrisseau’s role as storyteller and spiritual mediator. His images are never just pictures - they are teachings, stories and links to sacred Anishinaabe traditions, translated from oral history into a powerful graphic form.

"Crazy Horse" captures the profound relationship between horse and rider that transformed Plains Indigenous life.

The arrival of the horse changed everything; patterns of hunting, warfare, travel and social organization all shifted around this new partnership.

Christopher Pardell's sculpture honours both the animal and the relationship.
The emotional weight of Pardell's sculptures stems from his deep respect for the people and cultures he depicts.

Working primarily in bronze and lucite, Pardell combines traditional sculpting methods with contemporary techniques to achieve pieces of remarkable intricacy. Every feather, every fold of fabric, every expression tells a story of meticulous observation.

Jade Bald Eagle captures the eagle's essential nature: vigilance and authority combined in a single form.

David Wong understood that the eagle's symbolic power across cultures stems from observable reality.

Wong's mastery of jade developed over decades of dedicated practice, beginning with a five-year apprenticeship in traditional Chinese carving techniques. This foundation in time-honoured methods gave him the confidence to pursue his own artistic vision.

Asian Heritage Month is a time to honour the Asian artists who have helped shape Canadian art.

David Wong's jade carvings alone represent a profound meeting of traditional Chinese craft and the Canadian North. Wong is one of many Asian artists whose perspectives have expanded how we see this country.

At EA Studios, we've spent over 50 years collecting work that reflects the full complexity of Canadian art. This May, we're grateful for every artist who brought their whole story to their craft.

David Wong brought traditional Chinese carving traditions to the wildlife of Canada’s North, transforming BC nephrite jade into bears, eagles, salmon and more with remarkable precision and emotional depth.

For Wong, jade was already a deeply meaningful stone long before he discovered that some of the world’s finest deposits were here in Canada. His work is a powerful meeting point between cultures, materials and place.

This Asian Heritage Month, we’re honouring how his story and sculptures have shaped the way we see both jade and Canadian wildlife.

"Ojibwa Grandchild With Woodland Flowers" demonstrates Norval Morrisseau's range beyond narrative imagery.

The organic forms speak to the vitality of the natural world, while the bold colours create a sense of abundance and growth. The painting celebrates life in its most fundamental expressions.

Morrisseau painted not to decorate, but to teach. Each canvas carries lessons from his people, wisdom passed through generations and given new form through his innovative visual approach. His art served as a bridge between ancient knowledge and modern audiences.

As we celebrate Asian Heritage Month, we’re honoured to share the story of master jade sculptor David Wong.

Born in China in 1935, Wong trained in traditional carving before making a discovery that changed his life: that most jade was imported from British Columbia. That realization brought him to Vancouver, where his artistry and this landscape became inseparable.

EA Studios sponsored Wong from 1971 until his passing in 1998, and today we steward one of the largest collections of his work. His sculptures reflect a lifetime of cultural heritage and technical mastery.

This month, we invite you to learn more about David Wong’s journey and spend time with the works he left behind.
