For Alba Anais, tamales rancheros are connected to family gatherings and community sharing, often made in large amounts. Passed down from her mother's own catering business centered on tamales, this recipe maintains her link to home. Despite needing to adapt to different available ingredients and environment, her tamales are a reflection of her lifelong passion instilled by her strong Mexican roots.

You can find the full recipe in "One City, Many Kitchens: Burnaby’s Global Cookbook," available for purchase at the museum gift shop for $24.99 (plus tax).

Today, we highlight Filipino culture through food with another excerpt from "One City, Many Kitchens: Burnaby's Global Cookbook" by Burnaby Village Museum created with partner United Way BC.

For John Paul Catungal, cooking is both practical skill and cultural preservation; having immigrated as a young teen, he worked to balance the pressures of upholding Filipino traditions with adapting to his new environment. Now, John Paul's Lumpia recipe not only plays a central role in family gatherings, but also stands as a testament to his hard work, adaptability and the connections he forges across family and cultures through food.

Find the full recipe in "One City, Many Kitchens: Burnaby’s Global Cookbook," available for purchase at the museum gift shop for $24.99 (plus tax).

Happy International Youth Day!🤸

Today is a day to recognize the contributions of young people and highlight issues they may face, such as access to education, healthcare and much more.

The importance of education for our community's youth has long been a subject of discussion. Highlighted by today's artifact, the first screening of the 1946 short film "Investment in Youth" was held at North Burnaby High School. It was produced for the Burnaby School Board as a method of demonstrating the importance of education and pointing out the need for school improvements.
