We are pleased to announce our upcoming exhibition 𝙏𝙧𝙤𝙥𝙝𝙞𝙚𝙨 by Myfanwy MacLeod on view from June 12–August 30, 2026. Join us for the opening reception on June 11, 6–9 pm with a special performance by local experimental, neo-psychedelia brother duo Malcy at 6 pm.

“Trophies” draws from the Burnaby Art Gallery’s history as a former fraternity house, investigating frat life's hyper-masculine, ritualistic, and exclusionary behaviours through classical and contemporary portrayals. Examining the connections between ancient Greek rites and sculpture and contemporary fraternity culture's visual and performative codes, Myfanwy MacLeod proposes alternative rites and relations. Leaning into the concept of a “trophy” as a marker of achievement, the exhibition offers a nuanced exploration of success, failure, and recognition.

Be part of the Chinese Canadian Apology Public Art Project! The deadline to apply for both opportunities is this Sunday, May 31.
➤ Employment Opportunity: Public Art Project Community Liaison
➤ Call for Community Members: Join the Project Committee

Following the City of Burnaby’s official apology for historic discrimination against people of Chinese descent, Burnaby Public Art is launching the first phase and process towards a permanent commemorative public artwork. Slated for completion in 2028, the artwork will stand as a lasting marker of the City’s apology and a meaningful place for learning, reflection and collective healing.

If you are interested and engaged in Chinese Canadian history, heritage and the arts, and have a connection to Burnaby, we encourage you to apply.

In “Artist Apprenticeship: Realizations,” students took inspiration from the City of Burnaby Permanent Art Collection as well as the theme of transmutation to create their own works of art. In its 18th year, the program supports the creative growth and development of Burnaby Senior Secondary students in grades 11 and 12. From initial idea to result, the emphasis is placed on the process of developing artwork for an exhibition.

This year, Artist Apprenticeship students developed their conceptual skills through art workshops led by professional artist educators Cath Hughes, Colleen Brown, and Mat Holstrom. Responding to five works selected from the Collection that had elements of the theme of transmutation, each instructor encouraged play and exploration of different materials. Hands-on learning focused on the process, rather than the result. Their initial creations sprouted ideas and formed connections to their final pieces, on view in the upper gallery.

“Artist Apprenticeship: Realizations” is on view until May 31 in the upper gallery. For more info click the link: https://ow.ly/S15t50YZ5bX.

Join us for a special demonstration and talk with master carver and kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (Kwikwetlem) artist Sweewa on June 4, from 12-1pm! 🌟 This free, hour-long demonstration will showcase his mastery of jewellery carving, using metal or repurposed coins. Sweewa will walk us through his practice and engage in conversation about his life as an artist.

Born in 1944, Sweewa (Joseph Kambeitz) is a master carver, jeweller and engraver. His traditional name means small eulachon in the downriver dialect of hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓. With over 60 years of artistry, he began carving at 16 and joined the Vancouver School of Art (now Emily Carr University of Art & Design) in 1962. Sweewa is mainly self-taught and combines modern techniques with a traditional Salish style. He is passionate about sharing his knowledge, mentoring and community.

Please note, there is limited space. Registration is required.

Our current Arts Alive and Artist Apprenticeship exhibitions showcase the incredible creativity of Burnaby youth!🌟 Featuring artwork created by Burnaby Secondary Students, these two exhibitions run until May 31 in the upper and lower galleries.

In “Arts Alive: (de)Construction” students display work that contemplate and respond to the physical, ideological, political and emotional forms of deconstruction. While in “Artist Apprenticeship: Realizations,” students respond to works in the City of Burnaby Permanent Art Collection, speaking to their interpretation of the theme of ‘transmutation.’

Celebrating the creativity of Burnaby youth, the Arts Alive program has been running for 44 years in collaboration with Burnaby School District 41! Here are some of the creative responses to this year's theme of deconstruction:

⭐ Clarissa Stewart, “Humming Bird,” Grade 10:
I like the way the feathers layer over each other to create the wings and tail.

⭐ Leah MacFarlane, “Living Surrealism,” Grade 10:
The idea behind my artwork is that I wanted it to look realistic, but also surreal at the same time. I would like the viewer to notice the eyes. I feel the eyes play a big role in my art piece.

⭐ Chloe Rollins, “Lament of Childhood,” Grade 10:
The idea behind my artwork is to show how the internet and societal standards can rip through childhood, turning what should be the best years of our lives into grey areas filled with insecurity.

The exhibition “Arts Alive: (de)Construction” runs until May 31. https://ow.ly/HqqC50YWfpJ
