Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre

Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre Honouring, preserving and sharing the history of Japanese Canadians and Japanese culture in Canada.

The term Nikkei translates as “of Japanese descent.”

Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre is an incorporated non-profit and charitable society which is community-based and primarily volunteer-run. Generally known as the Nikkei Centre and as the Nikkei National Museum for Japanese Canadian museum programs. Nikkei National Museum produces several exhibits each year, balancing historical conten

t with traditional and contemporary art. The museum collects, preserves and makes accessible archives, art and artifacts related to Japanese Canadian heritage. Currently the collection includes more than 3000 photographs, 350 oral history recordings, over 25 metres of archival and textual materials, and 1000 artifacts. The collections are accessed by scholars and community researchers on a regular basis. Each year, over 1000 students participate in our educational programs. In addition to public programs and exhibits, Nikkei Centre provides community services, weekly cultural programs, produces several publications, and makes our facilities available for public use and special events. Nikkei Centre officially opened on September 22, 2000 in a beautiful multi-use facility in Burnaby, BC, conceptually designed by renowned Canadian architect Raymond Moriyama.

⛏️Caplano University anthropology professor Dr. Hilary Duke and her research assistants visited the NNMCC to photograph and catalogue objects excavated from sites in the Lower Seymour Conservation Reserve by archaeologist Bob Muckle and his students (NNMCC TD 1391).

🌲These objects reflect the activities of Japanese Canadians who lived and worked in North Vancouver during the early-20th century. Muckle theorizes that the objects were left behind in a hurry upon the forced internment and relocation of Japanese Canadians at the start of the Second World War.

🍶The objects stewarded by the NNMCC include ceramic bowls and cups, glass bottles, and foot warmers.

TD 1391 was donated by Metro Vancouver with the support of Bob Muckle.

Introducing the TEAROOM PROJECT: Transforming our Cultural Space to Share Traditions 🍵

We are transforming our second-floor multipurpose Tatami Room into an immersive cultural space at the Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre. Built on the concept of “shichu no sankyo” (市中の山居 — a mountain dwelling in the city), the centerpiece of this project is an authentic chash*tsu (Japanese tea room) designed to serve as an oasis in the middle of Nikkei Place.

Designed by Shihoko Shimizu of Vector International Homes, the updated space honours the Way of Tea while blending authentic tradition with contemporary accessibility. Beyond tea practice, the space will host seasonal arts and crafts such as ikebana, kimono kitsuke, temari, mizuhiki, and karuta, as well as school field trips and private rentals.

We anticipate a spring 2027 opening! You can support the project today through the Nikkei Place Foundation’s Nikkei Next Building Improvement Campaign in two ways:

1️⃣ Make a Donation: Directly support the transformation of this cultural space.

2️⃣ Buy Nikkei Matsuri 50/50 Raffle Tickets: Win cash while helping fund the project! Tickets are available until September 6, 2026.
