ARTIST SPOTLIGHT | MICHAEL PAPE

Some artists paint wildlife. Michael Pape paints the connection between wildlife and the people who stop to truly look at it.

Born in Toronto and entirely self-taught, Pape has built a career around highly detailed wildlife paintings that aim to capture more than the physical appearance of an animal… He strives to capture its character, presence and emotion. His originals can take months, and sometimes more than a year, to complete.

And there’s an interesting story behind one of his best-known works…

Out Of The Mist

The painting depicts an Amur tiger emerging through the mist in the Amur-Ussuri region of Russia. While commonly referred to as the “Siberian tiger,” the more accurate name is Amur tiger, reflecting its native range rather than Siberia.

The painting was also selected as the winner of the 2008 Ducks Unlimited Canadian National Portfolio competition, with a limited number of signed and numbered editions subsequently produced through the Ducks Unlimited program.

For Pape however, wildlife art goes beyond simply depicting beautiful animals. His work is deeply connected to conservation and his belief that art can help people develop a greater appreciation for the natural world. He has personally encountered many of the animals he paints, including tigers, wolves, snow leopards and lynx, and has spent years advocating for wildlife through his artwork.

One of the lesser-known chapters of his story is his time volunteering at a wildlife rescue centre in Kleinburg, Ontario. The experiences he had there… Witnessing injured and vulnerable animals firsthand… Helped shape the conservation-focused philosophy that continues to influence his work today.

That’s what makes pieces like Out Of The Mist so compelling. It isn’t simply a painting of a tiger…. It’s a moment of wildness, captured in the mist.

WOW, TORONTO! 🎨

What an event! We had an absolute BLAST at the Toronto Artisan Market!

A huge thank you to everyone who stopped by The Northern Canvas, took the time to browse our collection, asked questions, shared stories, and chatted with us throughout the day. It was an absolute pleasure meeting so many wonderful people and sharing our love for Canadian art with the Toronto community.

We’re incredibly grateful for everyone who came out and supported us. ❤️

Now that the market has wrapped up, it’s time for us to get back to work! We’ll be taking inventory, getting everything organized, and updating our online gallery with new and returning pieces as quickly as possible.

There are certain places that leave an impression long after you’ve walked away.

Just outside of Whistler, British Columbia, photographer Felix Foxtail found himself standing before this weathered suspension bridge during a cold, rain-soaked journey to explore an abandoned train wreck hidden deep within the forest.

The rain transformed the landscape. Every wooden plank glistened beneath overcast skies while the towering evergreens disappeared into the mist, creating the dramatic atmosphere that has become synonymous with Felix’s signature style.

What makes this location even more special is that it also inspired one of his most recognizable photographs, River Wild. Two images, captured only moments apart, yet each telling a completely different story.

Titled “Suspension Bridge BC,” this piece captures more than a destination; It captures the feeling of stepping into the unknown. The bridge draws your eye forward, inviting you to wonder what lies beyond the trees.

Born in Toronto and later inspired by Canada’s North and Georgian Bay, Lumbers became one of Canada’s most celebrated realist painters. His work is known for preserving the stories, memories, and values that shaped generations of Canadians.
