Calling all artists! The Aurora Cultural Centre is currently seeking collage-based artworks to be a part of an upcoming exhibition. This exhibition considers contemporary collage as a metaphor for the construction and continual evolution of identity. The act of collage-making mirrors the ways that lived experience, cultural influences, and memories shape our self-perception.

We welcome collage-based artworks on identity and selfhood in relation to intersectionality. Collage is defined in a broad sense, including assemblage, decoupage, photo and video montage, and other mixed media practices. Works may include other media such as painting or drawing, but collage must be a significant component of the overall design.

Deadline is extended to July 16, apply now: https://auroraculturalcentre.ca/open-calls/collage-based-artworks/

Unearthed – My Equilibrium presents Jing Fu’s atmospheric landscapes in conversation with her ongoing explorations in abstraction. Bridging her formal training in shan shui (traditional Chinese landscape art) with her abstraction series, Roots, this exhibition reflects Fu’s pursuit of internal balance moving between Eastern and Western visual languages.

About the Artist:
Jing Fu grew up in the urban environment of Shanghai, China, with limited access to nature. This restriction deepened her longing for the natural world, which she sees as ‘a symbol of freedom and escape from stress”. In 1998, Fu immigrated to Canada, now based in Newmarket where she was inspired by its beautiful trails and landscapes.

Join us for Unearthed – My Equilibrium Closing Talk on August 12 at 7PM. In conversation with Gallery Manager, Ashlyn Gregory, and artist Jing Fu, this talk will dive into Fu’s artistic practice, contemplations, and process. This event is free, but we ask all attendees to RSVP by following the links in bio under Gallery Events.

In a Friendly Sky presents a new body of work by Brandon Baghaee created during his winter residency at the Aurora Cultural Centre. In this series, Baghaee explores his relationship to his Jamaican grandparents through self-portraiture, seamlessly weaving family history with broader cultural and historical references. Tapping into bell hooks’ writings on building Black community through liberatory habits of being, Brandon connects to his grandparents by recreating their daily practices within his paintings.

Brandon Baghaee will be on-site Thursdays at 12-3PM, be sure to come by the gallery to say hi and hear more about his work!
