CHANCERY REGATTA for 11 years (2009-2019) was a friendly non-competitive race on beautiful Lake Muskoka for promotion of sailing as an aspect of green philosophy. Although reduction of symptoms is the goal of all kinds of therapy, the means in various paradigms differ. Thus, in psychoanalysis, the ultimate aim is to assist the patient in reaching a state of mind that Freud called
“Respect of Reality.” Consequently, as preferable modality of mental treatment, Freud considered not use of medication (even cocaine…), not “working on relations,” and not even psychoanalysis per se, but engagement in a meaningful activity in the Real World … Among activities of this sort, sailing seems to be one of the most pure forms of facing the Reality – in context of simple and uncompromising physics of the Wind, Sail, and Waive…

Everyone remembers Kon-Tiki. Almost nobody remembers the 61-year-old who went farther — alone.

Seven years after Thor Heyerdahl's famous six-man raft expedition, American sailor William Willis built his own balsa raft in Peru and named it Seven Little Sisters. His crew: one cat, one parrot, and himself, at an age when most men of his generation were being handed retirement watches.

In 1954 he set out into the Pacific and stayed out there for months, alone at the steering oar, managing sails and lines built for a crew, on a vessel that can't exactly be turned around. When he finally reached American Samoa, he had rafted roughly 6,700 miles — about 2,200 miles farther than Kon-Tiki — one of the longest solo raft voyages ever made.

Willis wrote that the sea was where he felt most alive, and his whole voyage reads like proof: not a scientist testing a theory, not a racer chasing a trophy — just a man who wanted to know if he still had it. The answer carried him across the widest ocean on Earth with a cat asleep in the shade of the sail.

Some people age out of adventure. Others just pack lighter.

There’s a quiet satisfaction in knowing how to handle things the old way. Tying a proper bowline without thinking. Reading the wind by the texture on the water. Backing into a slip without thrusters or theatrics. Skills that aren’t flashy—but they endure.

The world keeps automating, simplifying, buffering the edges. But sailing still demands feel. It asks you to understand tension in a line, balance in a sail plan, the subtle vibration of an engine that isn’t quite right. You can’t swipe your way through that. You either know it, or you learn it the hard way.

Maybe that’s why so many of us are drawn to this life. It keeps our hands calloused and our minds sharp, even when everything else feels like it’s been reduced to a touchscreen. ⚓🌊

Every family has one person who stepped off the expected path. The one who chose docks over driveways and weather forecasts over routines.

Sailing doesn’t create that instinct—it reveals it. Life afloat rewards self-reliance, patience, and a certain comfort with being different.

Most sailors didn’t become the odd one out by accident. ⛵⚓
