Join us Mon. Sep. 28 at 4pm for the official unveiling of “Msit No’kmaq, All My Relations”, a sculpture by Lorne A. Julien (Millbrook First Nation, We’kopekitk, Mi’kma’ki).

Afterwards, you're invited to stay for chili (including vegetarian option) and luskini'kin (traditional quick bread, similar to bannock or fry bread).

Carew Tironiate Meuse, a.k.a Cruzer, (Bear River First Nation, L'sitkuk, Mi’kma’ki/Penticton, BC), will lead a smudging ceremony and share teachings with those attending.

Julien and Angelika Waldow will discuss the sculpture, its imagery, and the ideas that informed the work, and the project that led to its installation on on our grounds, facing east to greet the sunrise.

The ceremony will take place outdoors at ARTSPLACE (indoors in case of rain).

Visit ARTSPLACE between 12-2pm Sat. Sep. 24 during Reece Steinberg's Open Studio -- part of his "Librarians in the Loop" artist residency.

Everyone is welcome!

Reece is a textile artist and librarian department head at Toronto Metropolitan University Libraries.

During his Sep. 20-30 residence at ARTSPLACE, Reece is weaving tapestries using found yarn and a curb-found toy loom.

His work uses large colourful weavings to document the contrasting pressures and opportunities rising from the emergence of generative AI.

In this environment, there is conflict about the role of libraries. Do librarians guide people to oppose AI chatbots or teach them how to use AI effectively? These weavings translate interviews with librarians into rich woven tapestries.
The choice of physical weavings to deploy this research is intentional in an environment where chatbots and even typed text such as academic writing is suspect. Weavings serve as an urgent vehicle to build trust, foster connectedness among librarians and enable conversations about AI and education.
