The AHS team took an impromptu visit to the Tupperville School Museum yesterday! 🏫✨️📚

One of the last remaining one-room schoolhouses in Nova Scotia, the museum offers a unique glimpse into the educational and cultural history of our region. We thoroughly enjoyed viewing the museum's Louis Jeremy collection, school records, and other local history artifacts. There is a lot of wonderful information packed into a small space! We also enjoyed exploring their lovely outdoor area. ☀️🍃

We're seeing red at the O'Dell House Museum! 🍒❤️🌹

We've updated our showcase shelves again, and this time, we've pulled out a fun and fascinating selection of red artifacts from the AHS collection. From soda bottles and safety hats to garden gnomes and razors, we've got a lot of interesting objects on display.

This afternoon, we took some time to celebrate our amazing team as we near the end of another busy and eventful summer season at AHS! MAYFLOWER DESCENDANTS ANNUAL CONFERENCE 📜✨️

Nova Scotia has one of the highest concentrations of descendants of Mayflower passengers anywhere in the world. Could you be one?

To celebrate this link to the 1620 voyage of the Mayflower, the Nova Scotia Colony of Mayflower Descendants will hold its annual conference on Friday and Saturday, October 2- 3, 2026, at the Old Orchard Inn, Wolfville, Nova Scotia.

Anyone interested in tracing ancestry to passengers on the 1620 voyage of the Mayflower to New England is welcome or just come to hear the great speakers.

Guest Speakers: Dr. Jennifer MacDonald, Acadia University Associate professor in History and Classics; Dr. Roger Lewis, Director of Consultation with the Sɨkɨpne’katik Governance Initiative; and The Rev. Dr. W. Becket Soule, Governor and Elder of the Canadian Mayflower Society, and Historian of the NC Mayflower Society.
A group workshop with Past Mayflower Historian Judi Archibald will be offered also.

MAKING CONNECTIONS ❤️🏠

This past weekend, we had a lovely surprise visitor at North Hills Museum! Debbie is the 3x great niece of Mr. Robert Patterson, and she travelled from Dartmouth with her friend to visit the museum for the first time.

Debbie enjoyed a wonderful guided tour from Museum Interpreter Carol, and we loved learning more about her personal connection to Mr. Patterson. This is what museums are all about - making connections, sharing stories, and preserving our heritage.

GETTING READY IN THE REGENCY ERA 🥿👒

Women's fashion in the Regency era (1790s-1820s) was quite different from the styles popular during most of the earlier Georgian and later Victorian periods, when clothing was generally tight against the torso and full-skirted below the waist.

Regency fashion followed classical ideals, inspired by the ancient Greek and Roman styles. Heavily b***d stays gave way to a celebration of the natural form. Bodices were short, and waistlines fell just below the bust. Light fabrics and a more natural silhouette were very popular.

Regency undergarments for women typically consisted of:

1. Chemise: A knee-length white cotton or linen dress worn directly against the skin to absorb body oils and protect outer clothing.

2. Short Stays/Corset: A lightly b***d undergarments that shaped the bust upward and supported the back.

3. Petticoats: One or more white cotton, linen, or flannel skirts worn over the stays to give dresses an opaque appearance and slightly fuller silhouette.

4. Stockings: Knitted cotton or silk hose held up below the knee with fabric garters.
