"albedo" explores the boundary between the visible and the invisible - the place where light meets matter and reveals realities that often go unnoticed. In this solo exhibition by Capucine Vandebrouck, we are reminded that the invisible is not a void; indeed, it actively shapes our world. It serves as a source of vital information - found in soils, oceans, and glaciers - that allows us to better understand our origins and strengthens our sense of connection to the living world. The invisible allows life to reveal itself and fosters a sense of empathy within us toward that living world.
The albedo effect is a scientific phenomenon measuring the light reflected by a surface, ranging from brilliant ice to dark ocean waters. Every surface absorbs or reflects light according to its albedo, determining what becomes visible and what fades from view. Earth’s average albedo is dropping significantly due to the loss of ice and snow. This decline accelerates global warming, as less light is reflected back into space. A less reflective, warmer Earth impacts ecosystems, oceans, and the water cycle.
The works in the exhibition reveal how light shapes our perception and remind us of the fragile balance of life. Through photograms, projections into the invisible, and sensory installations, the "albedo" exhibition makes tangible the human impact on the visible world, the vulnerability of ecosystems, and the urgent need for ecological awareness. The exhibition invites us to look closely at what emerges, what remains hidden, and the responsibility that arises from how we perceive the world.
