Henri Lebrun: instrument maker… and revolutionary?

Taken in 1894 during the commemorations of the Belgian Revolution of 1830, this photograph brings together 38 men who had volunteered to fight in the September days.

Henri Lebrun is standing on the far right, recognisable by his long moustache. He was 80 years old at the time.

A Brussels instrument maker and specialist in valves, Henri Lebrun had a much more intriguing story than might first appear… What role did he actually play during the events of 1830?

Prise en 1894 lors des commémorations de la Révolution belge de 1830, cette photographie réunit 38 anciens volontaires des combats de septembre.

Henri Lebrun se tient tout à droite, reconnaissable à ses longues moustaches. Il a alors 80 ans.

Facteur d’instruments bruxellois et spécialiste des pistons, Henri Lebrun a pourtant une histoire bien plus étonnante qu’il n’y paraît… Quel rôle a-t-il réellement joué lors des événements de 1830 ?

🦔 Et si une carapace de tatou devenait un instrument de musique ?

Ce mois-ci, le MIM met sous les projecteurs le charango andin, le cousin sud-américain de la guitare.

Né il y a près de trois siècles dans la région de Potosí (Bolivie), le charango aurait d'abord été fabriqué à partir d'une carapace de tatou, avant d'évoluer vers les modèles en bois que l'on connaît aujourd'hui.

L'exemplaire présenté au MIM, originaire du Pérou, témoigne de cette histoire fascinante. Il fait partie d'un ensemble de sept instruments offerts au musée par le musicien et compositeur André Sas.

🎨 From 9 to 16 July, the Mahillon Foyer (Saintenoy building) will host a free exhibition showcasing paintings and visual artworks created by young artists from the Mawhibaty Programme during their artistic residency in Brussels, organised as part of the Brussels Cultural Summer Classes in collaboration with La Cambre - École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Visuels

✨ Don’t miss the special presentation on Thursday 16 July at 2:30pm: the artists will introduce their creations and share their artistic journey with the public. The event will be preceded at 1:30pm by a concert featuring young talents from the singing and piano classes of the Conservatoire royal de Bruxelles.

🧐 In the spotlight – July

What if the piano met the viola da gamba?

This month, the MIM puts the spotlight on the piano-viole, a hybrid instrument born from an idea attributed to Leonardo da Vinci and realized in Brussels in 1835 by Herman Lichtenthal.

Forgotten after a mechanical failure and rediscovered more than 150 years later, it has been restored at the MIM thanks to extensive research and collaboration with several specialist partners.

☀️ A treasure hunt awaits at the MIM this summer! 🪰🎶

This holiday season, children aged 4 to 10 are invited to explore the museum in a playful and unexpected way with Vlieg/Fly.

Armed with a set of special cards, families set off on an interactive journey through the museum. Colours, shapes, animals… each clue connects in surprising ways to the musical instruments on display. Look closely, explore the details, and let your imagination lead the way to the treasure!
