The House of European History is a history museum in Brussels, Belgium, focusing on the recent history of the continent of Europe and the European integration process. The museum offers a unique perspective on the history of the continent. It takes a transnational approach to the main events and phenomena that have united and divided Europeans through time. It explores the diverse legacies and int

erpretations of its history. While learning about Europe’s past, visitors are encouraged to think critically about its present in order to engage in its future. The museum is open seven days a week and entrance is free. An interactive tablet provides the museum content in 24 languages. Guided tours, resources for schools and special trails for families with children are available in French, Dutch, German and English. Moderation policy

|OBJECT OF THE MONTH| ✨This month, we spotlight Baga Nimba (Gold) by Nigerian-British artist Niyi Olagunju.

The sculpture combines a recently made wooden form in the Baga Nimba tradition with a bronze cast covered in 22-carat gold leaf. By splitting the sculpture and reuniting wood and gilded metal, Olagunju explores how African art and cultural heritage have been appropriated and commercialised in the West.

Traditionally associated with harvest and fertility rituals, Baga Nimba sculptures had spiritual and social meanings. In Olagunju’s work, their transformation into collectors’ and commercial objects raises questions about how colonialism and global trade have altered the meaning and value attributed to African cultural heritage.

|BLACK RIBBON DAY|🕯️

23 August marks the Europe-wide Day of Remembrance for the Victims of All Totalitarian and Authoritarian Regimes, also known as the Black Ribbon Day – a day on which we honour the memory of all those who suffered and lost their lives under totalitarian regimes.

On 23 August 1939, 87 years ago, the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact was signed between N**i Germany and the Soviet Union. This agreement paved the way for the outbreak of the Second World War and its devastating consequences: concentration camps, gulags, the Holocaust, forced labour camps, and the immense human suffering that followed. For many Europeans, the end of the war was followed by decades of repression during the Cold War.
