Fondation A Stichting Tarifs/Tarieven/Rates: 3 – 7 € FR /

Born in Osaka in 1939, Mochizuki Masao graduated from the Tokyo College of Photography in 1963, in the same class as Issei Suda and Kazuhiko Motomura, who went on to found Yugensha publishing house in 1971. His work remained relatively discreet until the exhibition Television 1975–1976 at the P.G.I. Shibaura Gallery in Tokyo in 1998, which earned him the Photographic Society of Japan Award in 1999. The publication of the book of the same title brought him late but lasting international recognition. His works are held in the collection of The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York.

BEHIND THE SCENES

Lost and found, 1,775 found photographs in plastic sleeves, dates unknown

Courtesy of Takahashi Munemasa / Lost & Found Project 3.11

Following the tsunami that struck in March 2011, Takahashi volunteered with the Salvage Memory project, organised to recover and preserve the family photographs scattered amid the ruins of Yamamoto. Of the 750,000 images collected, more than 430,000 were returned to their owners. The others – too damaged or unclaimed – were classified as “hopeless” and destined to be disposed of. It was then that Takahashi realised what he had to do: “When I saw lots of people who looked for their own photos from the piles of found photos, I understood that we need memories to live.” Drawing on these abandoned images, he created a travelling exhibition intended to raise money for the survivors. This gesture of turning what might look like waste into the matter of collective memory is central to his whole practice.

Takahashi Munemasa (°1980, Tokyo) is one of a generation of artists whose practice developed at the intersection of documentary and the elaboration of collective memory—working not so much as an archivist but as a conjuror of the past in the present. Having trained at the Nippon Photography Institute, he won the Canon New Cosmos of Photography Award in 2002. His first book, Skyfish, was published in 2010. Since its creation in 2012, Lost and Found has travelled to Tokyo, New York, Los Angeles, Melbourne and Rome. In 2014, following the su***de of a friend, a survivor of the tsunami, he published Laying Stones, a photographic letter to the departed.
