Today I gained a whole new appreciation for what happens behind the scenes to make an exhibition possible.

As visitors walk through the gallery admiring the artwork, it’s easy to overlook the enormous amount of work that takes place before the doors even open. From administration and data entry, to preparing spreadsheets, printing and cutting labels, coordinating artists, building plinths, hanging artworks, measuring, levelling, adjusting and re-adjusting displays—every detail is carefully managed by a dedicated team of volunteers.

A heartfelt thank you to our administration team, our builders and makers, the hanging committee, group leaders, volunteers, and artists who all play an important role in the process. The artists prepare and label their works, group leaders coordinate collections and deliveries, and the hanging team works tirelessly to ensure every artwork is presented at its best.

An exhibition is never the work of one person—it is a true community effort. The collaboration, generosity, skills and time given by so many people are what transform an empty gallery into a beautiful exhibition space. And when the exhibition ends, it all happens again in reverse on take-down day.

Thank you to everyone involved. Your contribution, whether large or small, is valued and appreciated more than you know.

These photos capture only a small glimpse of the many people and countless tasks involved in bringing an exhibition together.

Dear Members,

We’re pleased to share that Toowoomba-based artist Alana Wilkie is now taking bookings for her upcoming 6-week Portrait Drawing Course.

Alana is a Queensland artist known for her highly detailed portraiture and drawing practice. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Art (Painting) with Distinction from RMIT University and has exhibited her work internationally, with collectors across Australia, Europe, the United Kingdom, and North America. Her work often reinterprets found imagery, introducing subtle disruptions that create new and intriguing narratives.

As a teacher, Alana brings both technical expertise and a supportive, approachable style to the classroom. Her courses are designed to help students build confidence, refine their observational skills, and develop their own artistic voice in a relaxed and encouraging environment.

This 6-week course is suitable for all skill levels, from complete beginners to more experienced artists looking to strengthen their portrait drawing abilities.

The Toowoomba Photographic Society is proud to present our upcoming Print Exhibition, Chequered History, at the Crows Nest Gallery from 20 May to 21 June 2026.

This special exhibition celebrates the Society’s 125th year in 2026 and showcases the diversity, creativity, and talent of our members through a selection of 20 works by 20 different photographers. Each image has been chosen from monthly awarded works spanning the past decade.

Visitors are also invited to attend our Artists in Conversation sessions on 24 May 2026 at 11am and 1pm, offering an opportunity to hear directly from participating photographers about their creative processes, inspiration, and the stories behind their images.
