The Peter Allen Festival is HERE and we are absolutely buzzing. 🎉

The School of Arts is proud to be hosting some of the signature events of this year's festival — and what a weekend it's going to be. Here's what's happening at 205 Rouse St:

🎤 Saturday 3 October — Todd McKenney: Celebrating Peter Allen
An intimate evening with the incomparable Todd McKenney, preceded by a special insight from Aleyshia, Technical Director and Tour Manager, on what it was really like working with Peter Allen on tour. An unforgettable night.

🎬 Sunday 4 October — Peter Allen on the Big Screen
The School of Arts Cinema screens The Boy From Oz, Not the Boy Next Door, and a special compilation of Peter Allen's live performances, playing continuously throughout the day. Drop in any time — entry $10.

🎶 Sunday 4 October — Altera Nigella & Local Performers
A very special Sunday evening concert featuring Tenterfield's most beloved song, performed by a remarkable lineup of local and visiting artists. Adults $20 | Children $10.

🎬 Monday 5 October — Peter Allen Films Continue
The cinema program rolls on — drop in any time. Entry $10.

We have some exciting news to share — and a big thank you to go with it. 🎉

We are thrilled to announce that the School of Arts Tenterfield has been the successful recipient of a Strengthening Rural Communities grant from the FRRR Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal.

Thanks to this funding, we have been able to purchase a brand new Allen & Heath Qu-6 Digital Audio Mixer and ancillary equipment — replacing the analogue system that had served the theatre for many years. The new desk was purchased from Jamie Sanson at Screen & Sound Technology, who was involved in the major upgrade of our theatre back in 2000 and has been a fantastic source of support since SOATI assumed management of the facility in January. Jamie installed the new equipment in late August.

For those of us firmly rooted in the analogue era, the learning curve has been real — but the capabilities of the new system are genuinely exciting. One of the standout features is the ability to operate the desk remotely via a tablet, making single-person setup for performances so much easier. For a venue that relies on a small and dedicated pool of volunteers, that's a game changer.

And what better debut than the Rusty Pickups drawing a very respectable Thursday night crowd to the School of Arts — their show last Thursday was the very first performance on the new system, presented with Arts North West On Tour. We think it sounded pretty good.

The work doesn't stop there — the remaining grant funding will be directed towards updating and adding technology to the museum, continuing to invest in the future of this incredible building

Thank you to FRRR for supporting community arts infrastructure in regional Australia. This kind of investment makes a real difference to what we can offer this community — now and into the future.

150 years. What a milestone. What a morning.

Yesterday we gathered in the Banquet Room to cut the cake and raise a cup of tea to 150 years of the Sir Henry Parkes Memorial School of Arts — and it was a beautiful reminder of just how much this building means to this community.

And what a room to do it in. The Banquet Room is the very same room where Sir Henry Parkes delivered his famous Tenterfield Oration in 1889 — the speech widely regarded as the catalyst for Australian Federation. Yesterday, surrounded by friends and long-time supporters of the School of Arts, it felt fitting to mark this milestone in that same space.

The official opening of the School of Arts took place on 7 September 1876, and to mark 150 years we were honoured to hear from some wonderful people. A heartfelt thank you to Christine Denis, a long-time supporter and friend of the School of Arts, and to Matthew Francisco, Acting General Manager of Tenterfield Shire Council, for their warm and generous speeches. And of course to SOATI President Kevin Markwell and the committee for bringing such a lovely celebration together.
