The Dogbox story – now 1982 to the present day – Part 2
When purchased by the Preservation Society, CX1962 in 2013, “Graeme” rested at the goods shed whilst behind the scenes administration was being undertaken. Thanks to the vision and determination of Frank Newman, and the support of other enthusiasts, the restoration journey began in 2016. Local builder, David Brown reconstructed the roof framing and re-sheeted with galvanised sheeting. A few more years passed before the real work began. More administration work!
The restoration of CX1962, was a meticulous process aimed at showing the carriage in working order in its later life, displaying the two-class accommodation. While waiting for the sandblasting to clean the undercarriage, volunteers started to remove the contents and salvage any detachable parts that could be repaired or used as templates. The undercarriage was restored and the first 2nd Class section completed. Work is almost complete in the 1st Class section with its pressed metal ceilings and weighted window mechanisms, a testament to the dedication of our volunteers and the importance of preserving our railway heritage.
External work was undertaken, new windows, louvre shutters and doors rebuilt with the volunteers creating the necessary templates. Internal work comprised of pressed metal ceiling restoration, lights, water bottles and accompanying drinking glasses, carriage luggage racks, rebuilding timber seat framing, seats reupholstered, brass handles and locks polished. Sourcing the materials including lavatories, beautiful, metal handbasins, ensuring the correct paint colour was used, the list was vast.
