FLTLT Lars Larson and FLTLT Luke Kempton have become Australia’s two newest Spitfire pilots, completing conversion training at Temora Aviation Museum last week.

Of the handful of Spitfires still operational in the country, two are based at Temora with 100SQN and maintained by Temora Aviation Museum engineers.

Guiding both pilots through their conversion was FLTLT Stephen Death, who has flown Spitfires for more than 20 years and says preserving that connection to history is at the heart of what 100SQN does.

On Saturday, the Museum welcomed Chris Piper and his son Nick for a very special visit. Chris’s father, and Nick’s grandfather - Geoffrey (Pip) Piper served as a Spitfire pilot during WWII. At just 21 years of age, Pip joined 273 Squadron and became known as one of its youngest pilots.

It was a privilege to hear more about their family’s story and reflect on the service of the pilots who flew these remarkable aircraft. Seeing the Museum’s Spitfire Mk VIII up close offered Chris and Nick a meaningful connection to their family’s aviation history.

✨ Celebrating 65 years of the Spitfire Association ✨

Temora Aviation Museum is pleased to share details of the Spitfire Association’s 65th Anniversary Celebration, taking place at Hunter Warbirds Museum, Scone on Saturday 17 October 2026.

The Spitfire Association has long played an important role in preserving Australia’s military aviation history and honouring the service and sacrifice of our veterans. Events like this help keep those stories alive for future generations.

The day will include museum access, aircraft and restoration tours, private flying displays including Spitfire VH-TR9, guest speakers Paul Bennet and Michael “Newbs” Newby, and a luncheon.

A wonderful piece of history recently shared with us by Michael Raley.

These photographs show the Cessna A-37B Dragonfly we have on display here at the Musuem - during its operational service with the Republic of Vietnam Air Force, with Michael’s father, Col. David E. Raley, standing beside the aircraft.

Michael kindly sent through both the original slide scan and a restored version for our archives.

Thank you, Michael, for sharing this special connection to the aircraft’s history with us. 💙

The Canola Trail season has begun, and Goldrush Ballooning are back in Temora for their first flight of the season tomorrow morning, Saturday 15 August.
