INTERTWINED
Susan Chen
Susan Chen is an Australian born Chinese artist, based in Sydney’s inner west. She creates both functional and sculptural artwork.
Her work resides at the intersection of art, design and craft; it is an exploration of materiality through experimentation and digital technology.
For the Intertwined exhibition, Chen created a series of seemingly traditional Chinese Porcelain vases using a 3D digital clay printer. On closer inspection, you can see Chinese characters digitally embedded onto the surface of the vases.
Characters including know, understand, give and share were chosen to capture the essence of positive cultural exchange, in which the vases act as tangible objects for this transaction.
The artist combines a traditional hand building technique, using plaster press moulds, to create the floral reliefs that adorn the surface of the vases. The decorative flora, including Wattle, Flannel flowers, Chrysanthemums and Magnolias, were selected for their respective cultural significance while demonstrating and strengthening the communal bonds shared through the artist’s cross-cultural experience.
Not only does this series represent a dialogue between two cultures, but it is also a celebration of the convergence of tradition and innovation, creating a new narrative for this ancient and intelligent material.
