Walk down any of Paddington’s characteristically hilly streets and you’ll see the terrace house in its full glory — the cast-iron lacework, the painted rendered facades, the narrow blocks tumbling down toward the harbour.

For many locals, these are simply the sights they've always called home.

For NSW’s housing planners right now, they may also be the homes of the future.

Dozens of public housing tenants in Waterloo have been given six-month relocation notices, months before any replacement housing is ready, as planned redevelopment moves from planning into active relocation. Demolition is expected to begin around mid-2026 and will take place over six to nine months as part of a staged program.

For three generations, the Ventouris family has run Diethnes, Sydney’s original Greek restaurant, in a subterranean dining room that feels more like a relative’s kitchen than a city restaurant. It has been a place where the moussaka arrives the same way it always has; where owner John Ventouris greets regulars by name from the bar; and where the décor has never needed to chase a trend because it never stopped feeling right.

After 74 years in the city, the family-run restaurant on Pitt Street will close this May, to give way to a multi-tower redevelopment and retail precinct planned the block.

Tell us about your fave Diethnes dish or memory here.
