West Space is an independent, non-profit contemporary arts organisation in Naarm (Melbourne) supporting timely work by artists in Australia.

Housed within multi-arts precinct Collingwood Yards. Open Wed to Fri, 11am to 6pm, and Sat, 12 to 4pm. For three decades, West Space has produced and presented art and ideas by Australian and international artists. We operate as a contemporary art gallery, a commissioning organisation, and as a space to build communities around art and ideas. West Space strives to be internationally relevant whilst remaining responsive to our context, our communities and the practices of local artists.

Congratulations to 𝗧𝗶𝗻𝗮 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗳𝗮𝗻𝗼𝘂 on her presentation in the 18th Biennale of Lyon, France, 19 September → 13 December!

Following her West Space Commission 𝘔𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘵 𝘍𝘢𝘪𝘭 earlier this year, Stefanou generously gifted us—and Collingwood Yards—two coins which are permanent embedded in the courtyard.

Taking the backgammon board as a starting point, 𝘔𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘵 𝘍𝘢𝘪𝘭 asks how we meet one another, and what we risk in the process. On this work, 𝗧𝗶𝗻𝗮 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗳𝗮𝗻𝗼𝘂 says,

“[𝘤𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘳𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳 𝘭𝘰𝘢𝘥] is a hybrid object: the civic body and its infrastructural mechanisms, the pressure of voices for/against state actions, a sun dial, a backgammon piece, and a portal to the City of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia, the founding city, a ‘sanctuary city’, where my lover lives - here, compressed in earth.”

“𝙎𝙚𝙡𝙛-𝙢𝙖𝙙𝙚: 𝙄𝙣𝙫𝙞𝙨𝙞𝙗𝙡𝙚 𝘼𝙧𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙩𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚𝙨 is less like a TV screen, and more like a dollhouse. Mythology is arranged to teem and stutter from inside: a chimera, just hatched, a beanstalk, through a doll-like silhouette an iPod stuttering frames from a new film.”

𝘄𝗮𝗻𝗶 𝘁𝗼𝗮𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗮, 𝘥𝘰 𝘣𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘣𝘰𝘺𝘴 𝘨𝘰 𝘵𝘰 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘷𝘦𝘯, 2021, pigment ink-jet print, 130 x 86.6 cm (framed).

𝘥𝘰 𝘣𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘬 𝘣𝘰𝘺𝘴 𝘨𝘰 𝘵𝘰 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘷𝘦𝘯 explores Black life, safety, and representation by featuring two figures in green maxi dresses, aiming to validate Black joy and existence against colonial violence. Winner of the 2022 Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Photography Award and in the ArtBank collection.

𝘄𝗮𝗻𝗶 𝘁𝗼𝗮𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗮 is a Congolese-born artist who approaches the political with a deeply poetic sensibility. Across photography, film, installation and performance, toaishara contends with the effects of colonialism on Africa and its diaspora and how, in turn, it has shaped an image history.

𝗣𝗵𝘂𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗡𝗴𝗼, 𝘙𝘦𝘮𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘥 pin

These pins are produced from the material offcuts of 𝗣𝗵𝘂𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗡𝗴𝗼’s artwork, 𝘙𝘦𝘮𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘥, 2023, transforming what would otherwise be waste into small, wearable artworks. In repurposing the leftover timber, Ngo draws attention to the environmental footprint of artmaking while extending his inquiry into the racialised structures underpinning imperialism, philanthropy and global capitalism.

𝗣𝗵𝘂𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗡𝗴𝗼’s practice is concerned with the interpretation of history, memory and place. The artist frequently works with collections of archival material, oral histories or found objects, which he describes as ‘someone else’s work or possessions’. Drawing on the experiences of both his family and the wider Vietnamese diaspora, Phuong investigates the cultural, social and political factors that impact personal and collective identity.

Ella Ferris is a Taribelang writer and performer who has written for the Australian Good Food Guide, Broadsheet, the Emerging Writers Festival, Fashion Journal, Meanjin and more. In 2024, Ferris was the inaugural recipient of the Meanjin inPlace Autumn Residency, where she wrote her first memoir, Crocodile.

We look forward to sharing her writing in the coming months.

It has been a pleasure to support Zainab as she tested and reflected on the core themes and possibilities within her practice.

On the experience, she says:

“I am so grateful to have received the opportunity to take part in the West Space Studio residency. Going in, I was hoping to spend the concentrated six month period developing my practice and to receive some professional support developing things like my writing and research.

What I ended up receiving was more than I had expected - in many ways the experience felt similar to what I imagine gallery representation would feel like. The incredible team at West Space (alongside external sector professionals they connected me with) provided ongoing support and encouragement that has continued well beyond the residency.

West Space’s support has made a huge difference. One of the things I loved about the program was that you can focus on specific elements of your artistic career alongside sector professionals who mentor and guide you in the process. I am eternally grateful for the continued generosity and support that West Space has given me during and beyond the program.”

𝗬𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶 𝗣𝗲𝗻𝗴’s 彭妍缇 new site-specific work 𝙎𝙚𝙡𝙛-𝙢𝙖𝙙𝙚: 𝙄𝙣𝙫𝙞𝙨𝙞𝙗𝙡𝙚 𝘼𝙧𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙩𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚𝙨 is now showing in the West Space Window.

Here, the Window is likened to our screens: both mediate inside and out, a static frame through which variables move, and meaning is projected. We gaze and assign emotion, constructing narratives from the surface. While the social, political and economic architectures shift invisibly and we adapt. Through our devices, we occupy an overlapping terrain, both public and private, intimate and performative. Each swipe or post becomes a negotiation between self-presentation and surveillance. The opposite of invisibility is no longer being seen.

𝗡𝗶𝘁𝗵𝘆𝗮 𝗜𝘆𝗲𝗿’s 𝘔𝘶𝘴𝘢 𝘨𝘦𝘯𝘶𝘴 seeks to relate the intimate, interior sensations and mythologies of the Tamil language to the broader, sometimes obscured territorial phenomena that have shaped its existence in Tamil Nadu, India. These photographic pictograms feature colloquial gestures and daily objects alongside archival excerpts referencing the Coromandel coast, the Musa Genus plant variety and records of proto-Dravidian script. Presented as a triptych, the work acknowledges how the nostalgic and kinetic world—perpetuated through Tamil—was formed within the grain of plural flows and collective nodes rather than an originary singularity.

𝘜𝘯𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘣𝘦𝘤𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘶𝘯𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸 is a new film and mixed-media installation by 𝗖𝗵𝗶 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻 that tells the story of a young woman embarking on a pilgrimage as an act of atonement. As she looks for guidance in the mountains, the young woman slowly transforms into another nonhuman figure, while a narrator deliberates to the viewer on the metamorphic pain of consequence.

“The film considers pilgrimage as both a physical and psychological movement through uncertainty, asking how faith can persist after rupture. With its title taken from a line in F***y Howe’s Saving History, this new work is underpinned by my ongoing investigation into doubt, the figure of the spiralling mystic in French Christian history, its colonial legacy in Vietnam and how the language and traditions of faith were fundamentally changed by colonial intervention.”

Combining voice, bat echolocation recordings, film and installation, 𝘜𝘯𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘣𝘦𝘤𝘢𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘶𝘯𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸 reconfigures a range of texts and research from national and historical narratives into a new and uncanny story, revealing the inventive possibilities of using language as a means of building a counterhistory.

𝗖𝗵𝗶 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻 is a research-based writer and artist, whose works span essay, installation, sound and the moving image. She is interested in how the unseen and intuited can open dormant paths for truth and relation, with her early work exploring failures of language and expression. Her current research interests are histories of independent filmmaking and Vietnamese theology, with her current project looking at French Christian mysticism and its colonial reverberations in Vietnam.
