Living with Art // Collector Profile

Writer Rosamund Brennan takes us inside the home of Perth collector Chris Hannah for our Living with Art series, exploring how artworks shape the spaces we live in and the personal stories they hold.

An intensive care nurse at Royal Perth Hospital and long‑time supporter of Western Australian art, Chris has built a thoughtful collection of contemporary works by many of our artist members, including Chris Hopewell, Kevin Robertson, Angela Stewart, Merrick Belyea, Jo Darbyshire, Cathy Blanchflower, Susan Roux, André Lipscombe and Vanessa Russ 👏

For Chris, collecting is instinctive – a response to the pleasure of living alongside artworks that continue to unfold over time. His advice when buying art: ‘Don’t overthink meaning. Go on the immediate impact. That’s my approach. I don’t buy art as an investment. I buy it because I want to live with it.’

Back our next book // support our donor campaign!

We’re excited to announce that our next major monograph will celebrate artist and cultural historian Jo Darbyshire 📚✨

Spanning more than four decades, this publication brings together Jo’s work in one richly illustrated volume, with key essays by arts writers including Kelly Gellatly.

This is our sixth artist monograph and we need your help to make it a reality. Donations through the Australian Cultural Fund will help bring this landmark publication to life and increase the visibility of WA artists nationally.

Final Week // Jennifer Cochrane: Prospect

Jennifer Cochrane works with reclaimed railway sleepers using minimal intervention, allowing the surface, texture and embedded histories of the material to emerge. Through the process of burning and applying a wax finish, the timber is transformed, at times taking on an almost bronze-like appearance.

UP NEXT // Stormy Weather: Group Exhibition • Opening Saturday 30 May, 2–4pm

A group exhibition that invites us to look toward the soaring skies above. While Western Australia is well known for its vast blue horizons, this exhibition turns to the darker moments – luminous clouds thickening, rain pending, storms breaking without warning.

Across painting, drawing, sculpture, photography and video, the artists consider the unfolding drama of shifting weather patterns and the moods they carry with them.

ARTISTS: Merrick Belyea | Rebecca Dagnall | George Haynes | Nigel Hewitt | Jeremy Kirwan-Ward | Clare McFarlane | Antony Muia | Brad Rimmer | Kevin Robertson | Susan Roux | Vanessa Russ | Jon Tarry | Paul Uhlmann.

📅 The exhibition continues until 4 July.

A place where land, form and sound converge 🌿

Jon Tarry’s major new permanent commission transforms Kalorama Park (VIC) into an immersive land‑art experience. This collaborative project combines sculpted earth, sound‑based forms and native restoration into a single, site‑embedded artwork.

Inspired by the lyrebird’s call, Arthur Streeton’s paintings and William Barak’s drawings, the work is a contemporary dialogue between environment, culture and place 🌾🎶
