Since opening our doors in 1986, Orange Regional Gallery has proudly championed regional and NSW artists, becoming a vibrant cultural hub for our community and visitors to our region. Through exhibitions, public programs and a nationally significant collection, the Gallery has been a place for creativity and connection.

To mark this milestone, we invited the community to select their favourite artworks from the permanent collection and to tell us why. The 40 artworks in this exhibition include wearable art, paintings, sculpture, ceramics and works on paper, and are accompanied by accounts of personal connections, memories and reflections.

‘40 Years 40 Works’ celebrates much loved collection highlights and is a tribute to forty years of art, memories, and an art-loving community.

Exhibition dates: 9 May - 2 September 2026

Today we’re celebrating 40 years of Orange Regional Gallery! 🎂

Pictured here is Janie Raffin, from our archives, speaking during the official opening celebrations on 19 April 1986.

The Gallery’s beginnings go back to the establishment of the Orange Festival of Arts in the late 1960’s which brought bi-annual visual arts events to the Central West. This evolved into a community feeling that a permanent venue for these programs was needed. The construction of the Orange Civic Theatre in 1976 provided space in the foyer for small exhibitions. The Orange Civic Theatre Gallery was directed by Janie Raffin, so she was essentially our first public gallery director in Orange and was hugely passionate about the arts.

Janie and many others were a driving force behind the development of the current Gallery. So as we enter our 40th anniversary year we will be celebrating the many ways in which our community has participated in the rich and layered history of our regional gallery. Watch this space!
