Petrol prices and road closures have been preoccupying the minds of Central West locals for months, but spare a thought for motorists 60 years ago as they grappled with the transition to the decimal system!
Connor’s Servatorium occupied a prominent place on Bathurst Road in Orange, operating as a garage and petrol station from the 1950s until its closure in 1974.
The Connor family donated a collection of material related to the family business to Orange Regional Museum, from photographs and wage books to examples of promotional gifts for customers and apprenticeship documents.
Treasures from this collection include a petrol pump quantity indicator wheel adapted to the incoming decimal system in 1966, using masking tape and blue marker to cover the previous markings. Another gem is a promotional decimal currency conversion sheet, issued by Connor's Servatorium to customers.
