ILEANA CLARKE is an established local artist, painter, illustrator and art educator based in the Port Stephens region. With more than 30 years of exhibition experience, she has developed a diverse artistic practice spanning painting, drawing, illustration and printmaking. Her work reflects a strong interest in the natural environment and the distinctive light, landscapes and waterways of the Nelson Bay Area

We’re proud to celebrate PENNY AMBERG, a talented wire artist and proud member of Artisan Collective Port Stephens!

Penny explores the fascinating possibilities of wire, transforming copper and brass into intricate woven forms and sculptural creations. Her work celebrates the beauty of looping, shaping and connecting wire, with the spiral symbolising growth, evolution, balance and infinity.

We’re delighted to introduce JOANA JOHNSTON, a sculpture and mixed-media artist, whose creative practice expresses joy and love that may otherwise remain hidden within our soul.

We asked Joana a few questions about her artistic journey and what inspires her in the studio.

Q: What is the best thing about being an artist?
A: The freedom of expression. I love having the freedom to translate ideas, emotions and experiences into something visual and uniquely my own. It’s an exciting process of exploration, discovery and continual growth.

Q: What’s your medium of choice? Do you prefer oil, acrylic or ink? Why?
A: Oil is my medium of choice. I love the slower drying time, which gives me the freedom to work intuitively, make changes and build the painting gradually. I find the process both forgiving and calming, allowing me to really immerse myself in the work.

Get to know the artist behind the work through William’s own words:

Q: What is your favourite art object and why?
A: My palette knife is an indispensable extension of my hand in the studio. I’m drawn to the way it glides across a smooth surface, effortlessly shifting between control and spontaneity. Unlike a brush, it invites a more physical, expressive interaction with the paint- allowing me to layer, scrape and sculpt with confidence.

Q: What is your favourite colour and why?
A: I’m particularly captivated by paleo blue. Its vibrancy lies not in intensity, but in its luminosity and quiet strength. It evokes the clarity of open skies and the shifting tones of the ocean, both of which resonate deeply with me.

William’s work is expressive, considered and full of character - and we think you’ll love discovering it for yourself.

JUMBO GREEN and TREVOR WEEKES Art Exhibition

Jimbo Green‘s philosophy is simple but powerful: “Turn scrap into art — and make the world a better place”. Every piece is created using recycled and reclaimed materials, showcasing not just artistry but sustainability at its finest.

Trevor Weekes is a practicing Artist and Educator. He has been a Lecturer in Natural History Illustration and Fine Art in The School of Design, Communication and Information Technology, University of Newcastle. With both solo and group shows throughout Australia his art practice embraces multiple disciplines, specifically Drawing, Painting, Sculpture, Artists Book production and more recently Animation. His absolute love of animals has been a major topic of interest, focusing on birds specifically and flight.

A. ‘Local history is a real passion of mine, particularly preserving the stories that have shaped Port Stephens. I’m passionate about the establishment of a Port Stephens Regional Museum - a place to celebrate our history from the Worimi people through to today’

John “Stinker” Clarke is a wonderful example of why preserving local stories matters. His books capture the people, places, humour and working lives that have shaped Port Stephens, making local history feel personal and alive.
