Shades of War: On the morning of Tuesday, 24th May, a memorial service was held at the reserve to commemorate the 78th anniversary of the crash of RAAF A24-39 in the bay whilst making a practice landings in the Bay. The pilot of the Catalina, Flight Lieutenant Brian (Tubby) Higgins was among seven crew members killed in the crash. There has been a memorial to the crew on the front lawn of the reserve ever since it was opened, and supposed faces the spot where to plane was hit by a rogue wave. This service was held in conjunction with the 100th Anniversary of the RAAF, and representatives of the RAAF, Rathmines Catalina Museum, and family members among others attended. It is a reminder that the headland was fortified during the war with a bunker on the hill.
