Sawtooth ARI is an Artist-Run Initiative, based in Northern Lutruwita (Launceston, Tasmania), committed to servicing our local and national communities.

Sawtooth ARI is an Artist-Run Initiative, based in Launceston, Tasmania, committed to servicing our local and national communities. We aim to support voices telling the stories that need to be heard now, practices that break from oppressive traditions, and those that take risk in thinking and idea sharing. As an organisation we are focused on bringing art and ideation to the community of Launceston, as well as supporting the emerging creatives living along the banks of kanamaluka. Our staff and board create the framework of our organisation, but it is our artists, audience, volunteers and members, and the conversations they share, and the thoughts they have, that define who we are and will guide us into the future. Sawtooth Ari is committed to continually moving forward as a progressive and ethical organisation. We will continue to pay artist fees for all projects and endeavor to be a socially responsible member of the wider Launceston community. We continue to develop and implement models of operation that respond to our distinctive circumstances and geographical position; creating a sustainable organisation to service arts communities locally and nationally.

Is your hot water bottle busted? Bring it in! Georgia Lucy will teach you how to turn it into a hand bag. We can strut around the block and wow the town .You won’t ever lose this bag because you have hugged it tight on cold nights. It wants to be close to you. Only busted bottles will do. It’s a crime to dissect a working warming tool.

BYO own old rubber hot water bottle.

skills you will learn include: upcycling, basic rivet work, design, confidence, strutting, and you get to take home a very cool hot water bottle handbag 🙂

Georgia Lucy is an artist based in Dodges Ferry, Lutruwita, and has been rocking a hot water bottle handbag for nearly half her life. She cast the same spell on an old footy for her sister’s birthday (yep it's a ba***ag). GL enjoys exploring the magic and alternative potential in the things that surround us.

It’s our favourite time of year! The Members’ Show! Mark your calendar and let’s get exhibiting.

This year, the Members’ Show will run from 21st November - 13th December.

Opening celebration on Friday Nov 20th, 6pm!

To participate, all you need to do is be a current member of Sawtooth. If you are not already a member, you can purchase your membership via our website.

Submit your artwork via the Google Form over at
www.sawtoothari.com/2026-members-show.

Form submissions due by midnight 1st November 2026.

It’s Junction week! We’re so excited to have our current exhibitions included in Junction Arts Festival and looking forward to exploring all the festival has to offer over the next few days.

We will have extended opening hours as part of the festival, from 17- 20 September 2026.

Thursday: 11am-4pm
Friday: 11am-7:30pm
Saturday: 11am-7:30pm
Sunday: 11am-4pm

'Sawtooth ARI has recently moved into the basement of Macquarie House, right in the heart of the C*D in Civic Square, and Round 2 brings four exhibitions to the space.

The program features The Epiphany, a collaborative exhibition by the Templar family; HSP, a solo exhibition by Lara Chamas; a new solo exhibition by UTAS award winner Patrick Yates; and ARIXCHANGE 2.0, a partnership between Sawtooth ARI and Blindside ARI that connects two recent graduates from Lutruwita/Tasmania and Naarm/Melbourne. After starting as a digital presentation, ARIXCHANGE now returns to a physical format, maintaining its focus on artist-led exchange across regions.'

'The abbreviation ‘HSP’ holds double meaning, halal snack pack and highly sensitive person. I am both. Sure, this body of work can speak on class, race, labor and food colonisation, but ultimately, it’s a self-portrait of a sad, sensitive soul.’

Lara Chamas is a Lebanese artist and activist, based in Naarm (Melbourne). Fleeing from war, her parents migrated to Australia, where she was born. Her practice investigates topics of postcolonial narratives within the context of her ethno-religious identity, and lived experience of class, race, and disability. Utilising storytelling, transgenerational trauma and memory, and tacit knowledge; her research explores meeting points between narrative theory, cultural practice, current political and societal landscape, and the body, namely hers, as a political vessel. Central to her practice is the expansion of these notions in a more historical and anthropological sense, lived experience is central to the authenticity of her work.

Opening on the 11.09, is ‘Mereka dari Laut / They Came from the Sea', work by Patrick Yates, winner of the Sawtooth ARI award at UTAS.

'They came from the sea. That vast well of darkness, as dark as the silhouettes that watch them from the shore, behind limestone ashlar and timber verandahs. They are strangers amongst strangers; neither visitors nor guests and deserving no shelter. Their haven lost to the sea; there is no rest, for it never belonged to them.’

Patrick Yates is an Indonesian-Australian, currently based in Northern Lutruwita/Tasmania. As an emerging artist, Patrick’s multidisciplinary practice is rooted in drawing and painting, with recent explorations expanding into installation. Through surreptitious interventions, Yates’ research is underpinned by his personal experiences as an intercountry adoptee. Patrick’s works seek to examine bureaucratic systems; Australian politics, culture, and history, drawing intersections in Australia and the wider world.

In 2025, at University of Tasmania’s graduate exhibition, Patrick received the Contemporary Art Tasmania Student Prize and the Sawtooth ARI award.

ARIXCHANGE is an ongoing exchange series between Blindside and Sawtooth ARI, connecting artists across Narrm/Melbourne and Lutruwita/Tasmania.

First presented digitally in early 2026, ARIXCHANGE 2.0 brought together Isabella Rose Cort and Amy Baillie in a residency exploring how performance-based practices could be adapted for online presentation.

Now returning as part of Sawtooth’s new chapter, the project comes full circle, with digital adaptations from the original residency presented within the gallery space, alongside a live performance by Amy Baillie that re-activates the project, translating an initially digital exchange into an embodied physical experience.

‘Four people, four skill sets, four lived experiences, one family. For the first time Brett, Nic, Tristan and Bianca Templar are exhibiting together. We invite you to join our journey and embrace the unknown. Allow yourself to see the world through their eyes.’

Brett Templar and his three children, Nic, Tristan and Bianca Templar are proud Truwulway and Bunurong creators. Brett’s artistic journey began in his young years, undertaking mentorships in theatre and poetry before settling down and having children. This spark of creativity has been passed onto his children, with Nic being a qualified chef whom of which uses his skills to experiment with different flavours, textures and taste to take people on a culinary journey, Tristan becoming both a sculpture, realism artist and tattooist and Bianca leaning more towards cultural crafts with contemporary twists and mural work. Despite struggles with mental and physical health, their parents Brett and Mary always supported and encouraged their children to not let their struggles define them. Join us as we bring our different skill sets together for the first time.

We are working hard today in preparation for Nathan Pitchford’s opening of ‘patrula-mana (fire within)’ tomorrow night at 6pm.

In the meantime, we have 2 days left of our Sawtooth on the Move fundraising campaign.

We’re raising funds for essential infrastructure costs, including building walls, electrical works, and creating a welcoming, functional space for art and community.
