Unruly Beauty of Jack Latti’s Sculptures
Jack Latti’s wood-fired ceramic sculptures emerge from an unpredictable partnership between artist, clay and flame. Ash, heat and vapour mark each work with distinctive textures, producing rugged surfaces that seem unearthed rather than manufactured.
A playful streak runs through the imposing Shapeshifter Leaf Ear Doe and Shapeshifter Killer Rabbit, whose exaggerated scale brings humour to Latti’s earthy, elemental practice.
At the centre of his practice is the Anagama kiln at Studio Nioka in Research, Victoria, where firings unfold over several days. The method requires technical judgement while leaving room for chance. By resisting polished uniformity, Latti’s sculptures show that mastery is not always about control; sometimes it lies in creating the conditions for transformation and letting the fire have the final word.
These sculptures stand tall amongst over one hundred ceramic works by 16 artists at the Trio Art Studio and Gallery until the 8 November. Sat Sun Mon 10-4
