I’m absolutely devastated to let you know that I have to cancel my next four shows in Yass, Kandos, Narrandera and Canowindra.

I don’t cancel gigs lightly. In fact, I pushed through the last three shows feeling the beginnings of this horrible flu, but now my body is screaming NO MORE! and I need to listen. 😢

🙏 I’m so incredibly sorry to everyone who purchased tickets and was looking forward to coming along. The Narrandera show will still go ahead with a different artist.

When the last of the 98 redundancies came through in the four months after September 2011, this road went quiet for the first time in 95 years. Kandos Cement Works had made Portland cement here since August 1916, with limestone coming in from the adjacent quarry. Between 1928 and 1932, some of that output went to the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Kandos supplying the cement for it.

Looking south through the works, the scale of the place is still legible. Conveyor bridges span the gap between the weathered concrete and corrugated metal structures, carrying nothing now. Grass and small plants have pushed up through the cracked asphalt, and a yellow handrail sits in the left foreground.

The town itself grew up around all this. The NSW Cement Lime and Coal Company registered in May 1913, bought 100 acres from a local farmer, and the settlement of Kandos followed the plant rather than the other way around. In 1920 it became the first place in Australia with concrete electricity poles. The Methodist Church, built in the Spanish Mission style in 1919, is now the Kandos Museum and the principal keeper of the works' history.

The story has not stopped. Cementa, the contemporary art festival, has run in the town since 2013, and in June 2025 the site was sold, with a $1 billion waste-to-fuel plant proposed for the site.

Visitor Isobel McKay, kicked off her shoes and put our baldwin organ through its paces today.
The organ was donated by Dot Hansell in memory of her husband Horace( Horrie). Dot and Horrie spent many years playing dance music for regional audiences.
It's so good to hear the instrument vibrate into life under the skillful hands of Isobel!

This treasured object in the Kandos collection is a model house covered in shells donated by the Slapp family.
This week we were guided through the condition assessment and trained in conservation cleaning by Bathurst based conservator Anne Gaulton. It is a slow careful process and will take some time.
