We’re having another (mini) callout at WAYOUT!

WAYOUT Artspace has locked in some exciting new exhibitions to be announced shortly. However, we haven’t filled our 27 Sep to 29 Nov 2026 exhibition slot and it’s coming up soon!

We see a great opportunity to promote this slot during the Cementa Festival, 17-20 September 2026.

We realise this is short notice, so we’re particularly looking for proposals from artists and curators who have existing works that are ready to go or close to completion.

Meta-characters and Australian Myth: Cinematic Embodiment in the Australian Landscape

This talk explores how Australian artists and filmmakers reimagine cultural archetypes through the figure of the mythic “outsider.” Rather than fixed historical identities, these meta-characters shift through performance, repetition, and reinterpretation, revealing national mythology as something continually constructed and re-embodied.

Robards draws on examples from early cinema to contemporary art, including The Story of the Kelly Gang (1906), Shame (1988), Mad Max (1979), Cyborg Ned (2003), Apologies 1–6 (2007–2009), and Sydney Nolan’s Ned Kelly Series. This talk traces how these outsider figures are embodied across the screen, its history and landscapes.

Robards has fragmented, dissected, reinvestigated, redrawn imagery from the Kelly Gang (1906) and brought it into 2026. Shapes, lines, themes that are so distinct in the Australian mythologies.

The story of the Kelly Gang has developed into something of a legend.

Through moving drawing, the moving image, AI processes, material transformation and acts of repetition, Robards reimagines the history and brings it to life in the 21st century.
