The Noise of Time brings together works on paper by Ipswich artist Ian Friend, spanning more than three decades of artistic practice.

Featuring works created between 1993 and 2026, the exhibition reflects on the passage of time, tracing a lifetime of ideas, experiences and artistic exploration. Inspired by literature, poetry, philosophy, music and the natural world, Friend's work invites us to consider how memory, change and loss shape who we become.

Inspired by two contrasting architectural movements, 'BRUTALIST / Baroque' pairs the work of ceramic artists Donalee Moriarty and Nicolette Johnson in a striking exploration of form, texture and beauty.

Moriarty's geometric, modernist works celebrate the raw integrity of clay, while Johnson's romantic vessels draw on history, symbolism and the sublime. Together, their works create a compelling visual conversation.

Ian Friend's artworks can take months, even years, to complete.

Layering ink, gouache, watercolour and crayon into handmade paper, Friend repeatedly builds surfaces up before removing and reworking them. The resulting works carry traces of time, memory and transformation, where every mark, stain and alteration becomes part of the story.

Join us as we farewell Sharing the National Collection with an afternoon of art, performance and conversation.

Experience excerpts from Red, John Logan’s acclaimed drama inspired by the life and work of Mark Rothko, performed by Ipswich actors David Paterson and Davis Di**le. Stay for a Q&A with actor David Paterson and director Timothy Wynn from THAT Production Company, exploring Rothko’s enduring legacy and the emotional power of art and performance.

Then settle into the ambient sounds of musician Leighton Craig as he presents Farewelling the National Collection - a contemplative, long-form keyboard performance unfolding between the Rothko and Martin paintings.
