Meet Atahnee Simpson, Young Black and Proud Scholarship winner in the arts category. A proud Wakka Wakka, Cherbourg, and Jinibara woman from the Sunshine Coast, Atahnee is a devoted mother and an emerging Indigenous artist..
Atahnee turned to painting as a healing practice, reconnecting her with memories of learning art and culture from her father.
She now creates traditional art and jewellery using echidna quills from Jinibara and Wakka Wakka country, leading her to establish her own business Tahns Art .
Atahnee has received several accolades, including the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student of the Year, Metropolitan award in 2020 and 2022, and was a finalist for the 7News Young Achiever Award in 2023.
She was recently commissioned by the Department of Employment to design artwork for cricket bats awards in 2023.
Driven by her passion for community and family, she dreams of passing on her knowledge to young people, fostering cultural appreciation and understanding.
With the Young Black and Proud scholarship, Atahnee plans to register her business and pursue her goal of delivering art workshops within her community.
