The National Photographic Portrait Prize supports and celebrates photographic portraiture in Australia. Each year the prize attracts thousands of entrants from emerging and established artistic talent across the country. Featuring famous faces and everyday Australians, the prize celebrates the vitality and diversity of photographic portraiture in Australia.

In 2025, finalists were selected by the panel of judges – writer and broadcaster Benjamin Law, Senior Curator at the National Portrait Gallery Serena Bentley, and Leigh Robb, Curator of Contemporary Art at the Art Gallery of South Australia.

Following its exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra, the National Photographic Portrait Prize 2025 opens at Horsham Regional Art Gallery on Friday 16 October at 5.30pm.

Ever wanted to try life drawing but thought you couldn’t draw? Good. Come anyway.

Our next Life Drawing session is coming up on Thursday 15 October, and it will be our final Life Drawing class for the year. Don't miss out!

This month, we’re excited to welcome artist Mandy Collins as our guest tutor while she is in the region for her residency at Natimuk Exile. With 50 years of practising art and experience as an art educator, Mandy will encourage you to play with colour and explore new ways of approaching life drawing.

Work from a live model, experiment with different techniques and explore movement, shape and expression. No experience needed, just bring your curiosity and have a go.

You’re invited to the opening of one of Australia’s leading photographic portrait exhibitions.

National Photographic Portrait Prize 2025

Friday 16 October | 5.30pm
Horsham Regional Art Gallery

Presented by the National Portrait Gallery, the National Photographic Portrait Prize 2025 brings together striking and thought-provoking photographic portraits from across Australia.

Be among the first to experience the exhibition at our official opening, with special guest Rebecca Blake, Assistant Curator at the National Portrait Gallery.
Based in Kamberri/Canberra, Rebecca is a curator and writer who will speak about the exhibition and the stories behind the portraits. She’ll also be available throughout the evening to chat with guests and answer questions about the works, artists and the process behind bringing the exhibition together.

This exhibition is supported by the National Collecting Institutions Touring and Outreach Program, an Australian Government program aiming to improve access to the national collections for all Australians.

We love seeing the Gallery filled with creativity, curious minds and plenty of colour in our school holiday workshops! 🎨✨

A big thank you to everyone who joined us. It was wonderful to welcome so many young creatives into the Gallery and see them get stuck into making, experimenting and having fun.

School holidays + creativity = a pretty great combination! 🎨
Join us for two fun, hands-on workshops designed to get young imaginations buzzing.

🌿 PRINTING WITH FOLIAGE & COLOUR
📅 Tuesday 29 September | 10.30am–12pm

What can you make with a leaf, some colour and a gelli plate? Come along and find out! Kids will create colourful prints before turning them into their own home-inspired artwork.

🦘COLOURFUL CLAY
📅 Thursday 1 October | 10.30am–12pm

Kids can dream up their own quirky creatures and let their imaginations run wild! Think cheeky bush creatures, colourful creations and maybe even an emu in fancy shoes!

✨ $15 per child | Ages 7–12
Two workshops. Plenty of creativity. Zero boring holiday activities.
