‘Speaking collections: youth perspectives on contemporary art’ is a project supported by Museums & Galleries NSW Audience Development Fund. Working with key Gallery staff, local young people produced an exhibition from artworks by leading contemporary artists living and working within reach of Goulburn.

With works made between 1975 and 2025, this exhibition comprises photography, painting, drawing, collage, tapestry and video, with brand new interview footage of each artist responding to prompts from the youth participants.

Welcome to the latest instalment of ‘Paws on Public Art’, a recurring public art initiative that sees the Goulburn Mulwaree Animal Shelter and Goulburn Regional Art Gallery collaborate to support local animals in need.

Awooooo, don’t be afraid! It’s not a ghost, but me, Pippa! 🎃 🦴

I’m your dog of October dog, getting ready for Howl-O-ween.
Today, my handlers took me to see the largest sculpture in the Goulburn Regional Art Gallery’s collection. This awesome work was done made by David Ball (a great name if you ask me), and its name title is "Fracture."

When we got there, I thought for a split second that someone had finally built the ultimate giant dog toy. Seriously, it looked like the biggest frisbee on planet Earth, or perhaps a pawtal into another dimension. From the outside, it looks straightforward, but step closer and, woof! The inside is a whole different world. It’s made of Corten steel, 4.2 Metres high, built to outlast the weather, and can really catch the eye.

Speaking of piercing blue eyes, comparable to the inside of a glacier – let’s get to know me.

Like David Ball’s work, I’m quite the catch. I’ve got striking looks, a bold bouncy nature, and a very happy temperament. Like my Husky ancestors, I’m in excellent shape for all sorts of adventures, and will suit a hike, a swim, and the chilly Goulburn nights that Program and exhibition coordinator Hannah Gee is so afraid of. I stick by my pack, and I’m ready to put my Game of Thrones costume on for Trick-or-Treating (treat, where?). I promise to keep away the ghosts, ghouls and skeletons at bay (by eating them, of course).

No bones about it, we'll be having a howling good time!

Beckett was among the most original artists of early twentieth-century Australia. Deeply sensitive to colour, light, and atmosphere, she painted the coastal life of south-east Naarm/Melbourne with an eye for the everyday and the fleeting.

This talk goes behind-the-scenes to explore the research and conservation work that brought this rarely seen collection of Clarice Beckett works to light. Discover how the National Gallery became the first public institution to acquire Beckett’s work, and how recent conservation efforts have made this intimate collection available to the public for the first time.

Jocelyn Evans is Paintings Conservator at the National Gallery of Australia and is the lead conservator for Clarice Beckett. Many paintings now presented in the exhibition had been in deep storage for an extended period, and required Jocelyn’s careful cleaning, consolidation and sensitive retouching before they could be shared with the Australian public through display and touring. Through her treatment of the Gallery’s paintings by Beckett Jocelyn has intimate knowledge of how Beckett painted and the materials she has chosen.

Welcome to the latest instalment of ‘Paws on Public Art’, a recurring public art initiative that sees the Goulburn Mulwaree Animal Shelter and Goulburn Regional Art Gallery collaborate to support local animals in need.

Today, my handlers took me on a traipse along the Wollondilly walking track.

There’s a bunch of strange sculptures along the river, but what caught my eye was Anything will bounce if you throw it hard enough by Alex Seton. Sculpted from Wombeyan marble and onyx, this work was inspired by a pair of perfect skipping stones found near the artist’s childhood home near Wombeyan Caves. Bonus in the warmth of Spring they make for top tier climbing practice.

Speaking of bounce, I’ve still got plenty in me. A kelpie cross staffy, I’m the perfect trifecta of beauty, brains and brawn. The ideal home for me doesn’t contain feline friends, but I’d love to get around the human or canine variety. Curious, active and an absolute runway model, I’ll be the life of the school holidays and your cuddle companion on long Winter nights. Whether we’re strutting our stuff bushwalking, camping or hitting the beach, I’m your girl.

While I love an adventure, I’m also a certified gentle soul. Now picture this: a sleep-in Sunday with side of guilty pleasure snacks watching the tree blossoms bloom or the leaves fall. In any season, for all the right reasons, I’m a dog you’ll be happy to know.

We are officially open!

Last Friday night we celebrated the opening of 'Clarice Beckett: Paintings from the National Collection', ' 'Speaking Collections: Youth perspectives on contemporary art' and in 'Hands on Studio: Thirty Years of Practice'. It was a night to remember with the Gallery full of artists and supporters. The night featured extravagant outfits, new experiences and guest opening speakers Deidre Cannon, Assistant Curator at the National Gallery of Australia and exhibiting artist Steven Corsini from Hands on Studio.
