Today is Military Working Dog Day and we celebrate all working dogs in the military past and present.

In May 1916, AlF soldiers set sail for the UK aboard HMT A8 Argyllshire during the Great War.

Among them was Goulburn's Staff Sergeant Edward Godfrey of the 45th Dental Unit-accompanied by their loyal mascot, a little dog who lifted spirits and kept morale high on the long voyage.

His name may be lost to history, but more than a century later, his photo still brightens our museum.

We are pleased to announce that long-term Rocky Hill volunteers Judy Fowler, Carol Olsen and Gwen Dries (pictured left to right) have received Certificates of Appreciation and been recognised on the NSW Hidden Treasures Honour Roll.

The NSW Hidden Treasures Honour Roll is an annual public tribute that recognises the valuable volunteer contributions of women and girls in regional, rural and remote communities. Since 2010, more than 1,300 volunteers have been celebrated through this initiative.

Judy, Carol and Gwen were invited by Minister for Women, The Hon. Jodie Harrison MP, and the Rural Women’s Network to attend She Gives Back, a special event celebrating women who volunteer and the significant contribution they make to communities across New South Wales.

The event, held in Albury on Tuesday 16 June 2026, also marked the launch of the 2025 Hidden Treasures Honour Roll.

Congratulations and thank you to Judy, Carol and Gwen for their outstanding dedication and service to Rocky Hill and the wider Goulburn community. 🌟

On the night of 31 May 1942, the Second World War arrived to the Australian mainland, when three Japanese midget submarines entered Sydney Harbour in a surprise attack.

One of the submarines successfully struck HMAS Kuttabul, a converted accommodation ship, sinking the vessel and killing 21 sailors — 19 Australians and 2 British servicemen.

The attack shocked the nation and heightened fears of a direct Japanese invasion, reinforcing the urgent need for stronger coastal defences.

This small metal box is a rare and intriguing souvenir connected to that dramatic event in Australian wartime history. Marked “C49” and bearing Japanese characters, it may have originated from one of the submarines or been produced as a commemorative keepsake associated with the attack.

The object also carries a personal story through its connection to World War II servicemen Arthur Lovejoy and Jack Turton, who likely preserved it as a memento of wartime service and a reminder of one of Australia’s most significant home-front attacks.

Objects such as this provide a tangible link to the experiences, memories, and emotions of those who lived through the conflict.

Today marks the anniversary of the official end of the Second Boer War on 31 May 1902. Between 16,000 and 23,000 Australians volunteered to serve in South Africa, making it Australia’s largest overseas military contribution prior to Federation.

Around 600 Australians lost their lives during the conflict, with many deaths caused by disease rather than combat.

This commemorative chocolate tin from the Rocky Hill collection was issued in 1900 as a New Year gift to British and Commonwealth troops serving in South Africa. Produced by Cadbury, the tin features Queen Victoria, her royal cypher, and the inscription “SOUTH AFRICA 1900” alongside the message: “I wish you a happy New Year – Victoria R.”

Distributed as morale boosting gifts to soldiers far from home, these tins remain a lasting reminder of Australia’s involvement in the Boer War.

This Mother’s Day, we’re reminded that love has always found a way to travel home.

These two embroidered postcards, sent by Australian soldiers from the front during World War One, speak powerfully across more than a century.

Long before video calls or instant messages, love arrived slowly, carried by post, sewn into the fabric of trust, to reach the hands that mattered most.

Today, as we celebrate mothers in all their forms, these extraordinary objects remind us that a mother’s love endures distance, hardship, and time itself.

A remarkable transformation of one of our most significant objects — the General Elles’ Tank Flag from the Battle of Cambrai.

This extraordinary piece of history has recently undergone essential conservation treatment by the expert team at Endangered Heritage Pty Ltd

Through careful, specialist work, the flag has been stabilised and preserved, ensuring its story can continue to be shared with future generations. We’re proud to care for and preserve objects of such national and international importance.

On Friday, 1 May, the Museum had the honour of welcoming Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AC KC, Governor of New South Wales, accompanied by Mr Dennis Wilson.

During their visit, they met with Mayor Cr Nina Dillon, Councillors, as well as our dedicated museum staff and volunteers. The visit also included an opportunity to explore our current exhibition, In Their Honour: A Century of Remembrance at Rocky Hill.

We’re delighted to share the successful completion of a recent project supported by the NSW Government’s Veteran Community Grants Program 2025/26.

Thanks to a $3,000 grant, the Museum has installed new exhibition display cabinets to better present and interpret significant objects from our fi****ms and weapons collection. These upgrades enhance both the care of the collection and the overall visitor experience, allowing us to tell these important stories in a more engaging and accessible way.

Importantly, this project supports the ongoing commemoration and education of our community, helping to deepen understanding of the service and sacrifice of Australian men and women during the Great War.

We sincerely thank the NSW Office for Veterans Affairs (OVA) for their support in helping us preserve and share this important history.

The Rocky Hill War Memorial Museum will be temporarily closed today from 10:00 am to 1:30 pm due to a private event, reopening to the public later in the afternoon.

The Memorial Tower will remain open, however restricted parking will be in place during this time.
