🚂 WHAT’S HAPPENING AT THE ROUNDHOUSE?🔧

Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes? 👀

Steam locomotives 5917 and 3112 are currently undergoing maintenance and upgrades, giving visitors a rare chance to see these historic engines partially dismantled during our guided tours!

🚂 5917 – A powerful American-built D59 class locomotive that hauled freight across NSW and has operated mainline steam tours since 2019.

🚂 3112 – A historic C30 class locomotive built in England in 1914, with a fascinating suburban service history and some memorable steam excursions!

📸 Come along, explore their history while learning about our history also at Goulburn Roundhouse and see restoration work up close!

🗓 EXTENDED HOURS FOR THIS LONG WEEKEND!

🚂 Goulburn Rail Heritage Centre and Roundhouse will be extending our regular opening hours for this long weekend to include Sunday.

🚃 We are the largest operating heritage roundhouse in New South Wales, featuring a historic 1928 circular railway depot and a 90-foot working turntable.

🔎 Come and inspect our large collection of historic steam and diesel locomotives, freight cars, rolling stock, vintage workshops and machinery.

🧭 We are located at 12 Braidwood Rd, Goulburn, NSW, 2580.

⏰ Opening hours this long weekend: Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
Our last guided tour 2:00 PM and our last entry is at 2:30PM.

🛤 Argyle Model Railway will be open to the public on Friday and Saturday from 10AM to 3PM. Come and check out their detailed multi-circuit model railway layout built on site.

🚂 48 Class is a class of diesel locomotives built by AE Goodwin, in Auburn for the New South Wales Department of Railways between 1959 and 1970. It was once the most
widespread locomotive in New South Wales, and is based on Alco frames and prime movers, using General electrical equipment.

🗓 The 48 Class were ordered to commence the conversion of branch lines to diesel traction with the first entering service in September, 1959. Further orders saw 165 in service by October, 1970.
There were four versions in total:

Mark 1: 4801 – 4845
Mark 2: 4846 – 4885
Mark 3: 4886 – 48125
Mark 4: 48126 – 48165

🛤 As well as branch lines, they operated both main line and metropolitan services on every line in the state.
Withdrawals of 48 Class locomotives did not commence in earnest until August 1994. As of December 2023, there are six preserved locomotives, four of them operational. They are kept at the following locations:

•4803: NSW Rail Museum, Thirlmere, operational

•4807: NSW Rail Museum, Thirlmere, operational

•4821: Goulburn Rail Heritage Centre, operational

•4822: Dorrigo Steam Railway & Museum, stored

•4833: NSW Rail Museum, Thirlmere, operational

•4872: Junee Roundhouse Railway Museum, static display

📌 Goulburn Rail Heritage Centre and Roundhouse has its own 48 Class - locomotive 4821, which plays a vital role in daily Roundhouse operations.
4821 is dons the classic "Whiskers" livery. This livery consists of the 1959 NSWGR Tuscan red and yellow paint scheme featuring the yellow curved "whisker" pinstripes on the nose ends of the 48 Class Alco diesel locomotives.
4821 is used as a shunter used to maneuver, sort, and assemble rollingstock. It is a sturdy and reliable workhorse at the Roundhouse, and is a popular attraction for our visitors. All visitors are welcome to enjoy cab tours of this mid-century diesel electric locomotive. 4821 has been fully restored and is maintained in operational condition, and can be seen regularly moving around our site's 90-foot turntable, and participating in heritage events. - A.W

1076 being turned during the evening session at our Steaming Into Spring 2026 event.
Built by the Vulcan Foundry in 1883, it was originally part of the NSWGR's R-285 class and was used to haul suburban trains.
Last Saturday evening, 1076 was moved onto the turntable under its own power and displayed to the crowd. This was a massive achievement, the team fought to receive accreditation and after many years of hard work and dedication they succeeded.
Goulburn Rail Heritage Centre and Roundhouse would like to congratulate everyone involved in this project, they have changed the future of this rare, historic locomotive. - A.W

🚂 WELCOME BACK TO THE ROUNDHOUSE LOCOMOTIVE 3801! 🚂

Goulburn Rail Heritage Centre is thrilled to welcome Transport Heritage NSW’s legendary steam locomotive 3801 back to the historic Goulburn Roundhouse on the 3rd September 2026💚

🚂 As 3801 prepares for her upcoming trips and weekend in Canberra, The Goulburn Roundhouse will play an important role in the servicing and preparing of the locomotive before it continues on its transfer Canberra.

📅 WANT TO KNOW WHEN 3801 WILL ARRIVE IN GOULBURN?

For those hoping to catch a glimpse of 3801 arriving in Goulburn. It is expected to arrive around 4:50pm on Thursday, 3rd of September 2026 where it will be turned around at the Roundhouse on the turntable in preparation for its departure. 

⚠️ PLEASE NOTE: This time is indicative only and should be treated as a rough guide. Train running times can change, and 3801 may arrive earlier or later than the times listed above.

If you intend to see the train, please remember to stand behind the yellow line at stations, and remain only in publicly accessible areas, clear of the rail corridor.

R766 arriving at Goulburn Roundhouse during our Steaming during Into Spring event, held on August 29th, 2026.
This historic Victorian steam engine has been converted to run on standard gauge tracks in New South Wales. R766 departed from Sydney's Central Station on Friday morning, a moment that attracted crowds of Australian rail enthusiasts. The R766 locomotive will now start hauling carriages for non-profit group The Picnic Train, we at Goulburn Rail Heritage Centre and Roundhouse would like to send hearty congratulations everyone at The Picnic Train.

☀️ Goulburn Rail Heritage Centre and Roundhouse would like to send thanks to everyone involved in our Steaming Into Spring event!

🚂 Steaming Into Spring took place over the weekend and was a great success. A variety of rail and steam related attractions were on show for the public including immaculate steam and diesel trains, model trains and landscapes, heritage carriages, steam and antique machinery, miniature locomotives, and much more. Locomotive 1076 was in steam and open for cab tours. Many visitors enjoyed having a turn on the historic tank engines whistle.

📸 Locomotive R766 arrived at lunchtime, dazzling visitors. The historic Victorian steam engine has been converted to run on standard gauge tracks in NSW. R766 departing Sydney's Central Station on Friday morning was a big treat for train enthusiasts. We send our congratulations to everyone at The Picnic Train for this accomplishment.
