Join us this winter for Winter Improvisation, a group exhibition featuring four Vietnamese artists working across monoprint, printmaking, oil painting, and lacquer art.

With monoprint forming the heart of the exhibition, the works explore spontaneity, texture, memory, and imagination through expressive marks and atmospheric compositions.

Exhibition dates: 7 July – 30 August
Open hour: Tuesday to Sunday 8AM - 3PM
Location: Saigon Art Gallery, 327 Main Road, Glenorchy TAS 7010

Tran Van Quan’s monoprints create a dreamy, mysterious beauty through accidental forms and poetic textures.

Each work carries the one-of-a-kind quality of monoprinting, where image, pressure, ink, and chance come together to form a unique visual language. These works invite viewers to imagine their own stories through soft contrasts, layered marks, and atmospheric compositions.

Vietnamese lacquer art is created through a slow and delicate layering process using natural lacquer sap, pigments, eggshell, gold or silver leaf, and mother-of-pearl inlay. Each layer is applied, dried, sanded, and polished by hand, allowing the surface to reveal depth, texture, and a quiet glowing finish.

These works by Xuan Thao Tran show how traditional lacquer materials can be transformed into contemporary artworks, connecting Vietnamese craftsmanship with Tasmanian landscape, nature, and memory.

Over time, Vietnam developed its own distinctive lacquer tradition, transforming this ancient craft into a refined fine art practice built through patience, layering, sanding and polishing.
