The Museum was very pleased to welcome Mayor Sue Hickey and other representatives of the Glenorchy City Council today to officially open the wonderful new mural "Glenorchy Hills".

Created by Helen from Finch Design and painted by Joel and Nathan, the Mural was only possible thanks to the generous support of the Glenorchy City Council.

President, Jeff Bronstein, thanked the guests for attending, including Simon from the Glenorchy Gazette, and handed over to Mayor Sue to reveal the commemorative plaque. "Today was a wonderful example of institutional co-operation between the Museum and the Council which has delivered a bright, new artwork for the people of the City".

Today was a great example of what can be achieved when like-minded, volunteer-driven heritage groups work together to preserve Tasmania’s rich transport history.

The Hobart Vintage Machinery Society and the Tasmanian Transport Museum joined forces to relocate two significant exhibits to Penna under a long-term loan agreement, where they’ll receive some well-deserved TLC in the years ahead.

The Triple Expansion Engine—originally from the S.S. Sorrento—was saved by the museum back in 1967, while the Semi Portable Marshall Mill Engine was acquired from Kemp & Denning’s City Sawmill during its demolition in the 1970s. Both have spent decades in our Steam Technology Building, quietly waiting for their next chapter.

President Jeff Bronstein said ā€œRelocating these machines was no small task. With very limited financial resources, it was a complex operation and a real testament to what dedicated volunteers can achieve when working together. We hope efforts like this highlight to our friends in Government the importance of ongoing supportā€.

A big thank you to Elliotts crane hire pty ltd for their expertise and care in safely moving these historic machines.

Restoring heritage carriages is no small task—and it certainly doesn’t come cheap. That’s why we’re incredibly grateful for the support of AB&P (Abrasive Blasting & Painting) in Derwent Park, who have sand blasted the rusted seat frames from carriage SS7.

After many years sitting idle at Don River Railway, the coastal conditions had well and truly taken their toll, with salt air leaving its mark on the metal seat frames.

Thanks to efforts like this, we’re another step closer to bringing SS7 back to life.

A bit of fresh air never hurts—but it’s also a reminder of what could be.

With some willing mechanics and a bit of funding behind them, there’s every chance both could turn a wheel again. It’s never just ā€œa few mechanics and some moneyā€ of course… but that’s exactly where every revival starts.

Who knows—maybe our AEC Regal and Bedford 7SB will be back in service one day... but for today it’s just to clear out our shed.
