UPCOMING EXHIBITION// ca Gallery is delighted to present The Door, the latest solo exhibition by Sue Gill.

Sue Gill’s abstract impressionist paintings have long featured personal symbols, overtly and repeatedly. In this instance doorways, often black or dark in colour, yet perceptively optimistic, appear as implicit thresholds from the conscious to the unconscious parts of the self.

In this exhibition a new collection of works on canvas and paper will feature alongside a selection of earlier paintings from the mid 2000’s. While not a true artist survey, these two collections provide a unique opportunity to explore the journey of an artist, of marks and recurring symbols, navigating and expressing the continual movement in life.

This exhibition will run 8-30 September, with an opening on Saturday 12th September, 5-7pm.

Sue Gill is an established Australian abstract artist residing on the Sunshine Coast. She studied Graphic Design at Swinburne Institute of Technology and completed a Fine Art degree at the Victorian College of Art (VCA) in 1981. Gill has held more than 11 solo exhibitions across Melbourne and Sydney, and more recently here on the Sunshine Coast, and participated in more than 30 selected and group exhibitions.

COMING UP// Sue Gill

Sue Gill is an established Australian abstract artist residing on the Sunshine Coast. She has held more than 11 solo exhibitions across Melbourne and Sydney, and more recently here on the Sunshine Coast, and participated in more than 30 selected and group exhibitions. Gill has recently returned from two residencies in Barcelona and Tagle, Spain.

She creates abstract paintings predominantly in oil, charcoal and oilsticks on canvas and paper. Her work is forthright and expressionistic, with distinct mark-making and symbolism recurring across her works. In this exhibition a new collection of works on canvas and paper will feature alongside a selection of earlier paintings from the mid 2000’s.

FEATURED ARTIST// we are delighted to welcome back to the gallery roster the wonderful Des Rolph

Rolph is a Sunshine Coast based artist who completed her Masters in Visual Art at QCA, Griffith University in 2014. Her major project explored the importance that plein air studies have on capturing the essence of a landscape, that can be further explored in a more creative process in the studio. Consequently her work responds emotionally to the various landscapes she has explored.

She has been finalist in some of Australia’s highly regarded art competitions, such as the Sunshine Coast Art Prize (SCAP), the Waltzing Matilda Art Prize, and the Heysen Prize for Landscape. Her work has been collected in Australia and internationally.

This week our son Harry is participating in Darkness to Daylight, a fundraising event for Challenge DV - “a leading domestic violence prevention registered charity, partnering with workplaces, businesses, schools and community organisations to empower safer, more inclusive environments for all.”

It’s an overnight run event, he’s aiming to complete 50km. His school is in second place for team fundraising for this event.

UPCOMING EXHIBITION// ca Gallery is delighted to present ‘She is woven into the Mystery’, the latest solo exhibition by Kym Barrett. Through richly nuanced surfaces and an intentional obscurity, Kym Barrett’s recent paintings ask questions about the Mystery of being human. She investigates the meaning of the evolving organic feminine forms as they become woven into landscapes or claim their own personal space.

This exhibition will run 2-22 June, with an opening on the 6th June, 4-6pm

Kym Barrett has lived and worked in Chatsworth, south-east Queensland for over 45 years. She graduated from Fine Arts (painting and drawing) at the Brisbane College of Art (now QCA) in 1975 and has held 22 solo exhibitions.

Kym was the 2022 Bundaberg Art Prize winner, the 2021 Flying Arts Queensland Regional Arts Award winner and has won many other Queensland Art Awards.
She has been a finalist in more than 20 Queensland prizes and a finalist in 5 national awards since 2015. Her work is held in the Bundaberg Regional Art Gallery Landscape Collection, Greenslopes Private Hospital, Sunshine Coast Regional Council Art Collection and Moreton Bay Regional Council Art Collection as well as in numerous private collections.

Kym currently creates abstract paintings that are process driven and which, whilst exhibiting rich luminosity and depth are intentionally open-ended, describing something out of reach but also the artist’s journey to a deeper ground.
