The divide between art and science runs deep in our culture.

Science is often seen as exact, objective, and bound by strict rules, while art is thought of as free, creative, and subjective.

But this picture misses the reality of how science actually works. In practice, science isn’t a rigid, step-by-step process. Like art, it requires judgement, intuition, and creativity, argues Ann Thresher.

“Not even the logical core at the heart of science can escape ‘artistic’ thinking,” she writes.

🐋 The Whale is taking shape on Norway’s Arctic coast.

Designed by Dorte Mandrup, The Whale is emerging along the shoreline of Andenes as a new cultural landmark dedicated to whales, the ocean, and the relationship between humans and marine life.

Its sweeping, curved form appears to rise naturally from the coastal landscape, creating a structure that visitors can experience both from within and across its accessible roof. As construction progresses, the project is set to open in 2027.
