🔬18 October 2026: European Day of Conservation-Restoration
Celebrated for the ninth time, the European Day of Conservation-Restoration is an opportunity to celebrate the profession and highlight its vital contribution to preserving Europe’s cultural heritage.
At Schönbrunn Palace, we take our responsibility to protect this UNESCO World Heritage Site for future generations very seriously. We’re therefore proud to join this European initiative.

, 264 years ago, six-year-old Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart enchanted the Habsburg family 🎵👑

On 13 October 1762, "Wolferl" and his ten-year-old sister Maria Anna "Nannerl" performed for the imperial family in the Hall of Mirrors at Schönbrunn Palace. 🎻 Maria Theresa, Franz I Stephan, their daughter Marie Antoinette and twelve archdukes and archduchesses listened to their performance on the keyboard and violin.

Describing the visit to the court in a letter to his wife, Mozart’s father Leopold wrote about his son: “Wolferl sprang onto the Empress’s lap, flung his arms around her neck and kissed her heartily.“ 😇

🌍👧 Today is International Day of the Girl Child!

On 11 October, we celebrate International Day of the Girl – a day to amplify girls’ voices around the world and remind us that equal opportunities are still not a given.

In 2026, the focus is particularly on every girl’s right to a childhood in which she can shape her own future. Every girl should have the opportunity to learn, develop freely, make her own decisions and shape the future on her own terms. 💪💕

💡 The Schönbrunn Group is also making a bright statement on International Day of the Girl: our sites are illuminated in vibrant pink as a symbolic gesture to raise awareness of the rights and opportunities of girls around the world.

Schönbrunn and horses – a connection with history! 🐎👑 Empress Elisabeth was an enthusiastic rider and as early as 1946, Schönbrunn played host to a show jumping competition.

80 years later, the world’s top show jumpers returned to Schönbrunn – this time to the Courtyard of Honour, transforming this historic setting once again into a spectacular stage for international equestrian sport.

Longines Global Champions Tour Vienna | Schönbrunn Palace
From 24 to 27 September 2026, the Parade Court in Schönbrunn was the hotspot of the international horse riding scene. Four days of world-class equestrian sport, two Olympic disciplines and a packed programme of entertainment! Almost 20,000 visitors watched the action in the Parade Court of Schönbrunn Palace, while the free-to-enter Village welcomed a further 50,000 visitors. 180 riders from 37 nations competed with 350 horses, bringing top-level equestrian sport to this historic setting.

Did you know that the Schönbrunn Zoo is the oldest zoo in the world? 🐾👑 It was founded in 1752 by Maria Theresa’s husband, Emperor Franz I Stephan of Lorraine.

Then & now 📷️🐘 Towards the end of the 19th century, the Baroque menagerie was gradually transformed into a zoological garden. Today, Schönbrunn Zoo is considered one of the most modern zoos in the world. >>Click through and take a look at how the zoo has changed over the centuries!

✨30 years UNESCO World Heritage Site
In 1996 Schönbrunn Palace and Gardens and Schönbrunn Zoo were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. Since then, Schönbrunn has been regarded not only as one of Austria's most important cultural assets, but also as an internationally recognized cultural monument and a popular destination for visitors from all over the world.

If you’ve visited Schönbrunn recently, you may have noticed that the Hall of Ceremonies is currently undergoing restoration ✨️ The Hall of Ceremonies is one of the palace’s most magnificent rooms – richly decorated and historically significant.

"Austria’s Open Monument Day" 2026
Preserving the World Heritage Site Schönbrunn for future generations is a responsibility we take very seriously. As part of four free guided tours on today´s Open Monument Day, on 27 September 2026, scientists from Schönbrunn Palace took visitors behind the scenes in the temporary studio, specially set up for the restoration of the painting cycle by Martin van Meytens and his workshop. The sound of horses at Schönbrunn brings the past a little closer 🐎

Step into the Horses Room at Schönbrunn Palace – a room filled with horses and history 🖼️ The paintings in this room are among the oldest elements of decoration at Schönbrunn, dating from between 1720 and 1730.

Twenty horse portraits painted on copper panels, together with four large-scale paintings of the imperial stud farms by Johann Georg von Hamilton, fill the room.

💡Interesting fact: In the nineteenth century the Horses Room served as a dining room. That is why a festively decked table is on display here, faithfully copying a view of the room dating from the middle of the nineteenth century❓️Question: Who do you think was allowed to eat here? Longines Global Champion Tour 2026
Inside Schönbrunn, the Horses Room is adorned with historic horse portraits, offering a glimpse into the equestrian world of the court. Outside, from 24 to 27 September, the Longines Global Champions Tour takes place at the Parade Court Schönbrunn Palace.
