Have you heard about our annual acquisitions of contemporary art? 
Back in 1996, the Graphic Collection of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna was accorded an annual budget, upon decision of the board of the Association of Friends of Fine Arts (GFBK). This budget is dedicated to “continuous acquisitions of young Austrian art, with special consideration given to graduates of the Academy, but also considering related international works of art”. 
The acquisitions shall ensure the greatest possible diversity of artistic means of expression. In order to foster an objective selection, a jury composed of members of the faculty of the Academy and the scientific staff of the Graphic Collection shall decide on the acquisitions on 9 November 2026.
 Submissions: 19 October 2026 until no later than 23 October 2026 (9 a.m. – 12 p.m.)
Place: Study Hall of the Graphic Collection (Schillerplatz 3, basement, 1010 Vienna)

A Night at the Paintings Gallery - Long Night of Museums 2026 🦉

Are you familiar with Hieronymus Bosch’s ‚Last Judgement Triptych‘?

🦇 Come and see the highlight of the Paintings Gallery’s outstanding collection at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, and the current exhibition ‚The Great Michelangelo Is Dead! Avant-garde and Academicism‘. This exhibition aims to give new form to an age-old debate. It will not use academicism as a pejorative label for all that is outdated, nor credit the avant-garde with a monopoly on the new. Rather, the objective is to uncover the creative dynamic playing out between these two poles.

💫 Special Tour at 11pm: The Long Night of Hell. Guided tour of Hieronymus Bosch’s Last Judgement Triptych

🕛 The Paintings Gallery will be open until midnight on October 3, 2026.

🎟️ Tickets for the ORF Long Night of Museums (19 euros, reduced 16 euros, valid for all participating museums) will be available from October 2 at the ticket office of the Paintings Gallery.

The Great Michelangelo Is Dead! Avant-Garde and Academicism
will be officially opened on Thursday, October 1st.
 The exhibition aims to give new form to an age-old debate:
 Academicism will not be pejoratively labelled as all that is outdated. Avantgarde will not be credited with a monopoly on the new.
 Instead, the creative dynamic playing out between these two poles will be uncovered. This will be done from a deep historical perspective, and from current positions in the field of contemporary art.

Don’t miss this fascinating documentary about the conservator Georg Prast, with whom we are collaborating on this project.

Besuchen Sie uns auf der in !

Unsere Gemäldegalerie ist derzeit wegen Ausstellungsaufbau geschlossen. Doch an diesem Freitag und Samstag führt Sie eine Sonderpräsentation durch die figurenreiche Bildwelt von Hieronymus Bosch.
Das in Linz erstmals präsentierte Gigapixel-Bild des „Weltgerichts-Triptychons“ entstand in Zusammenarbeit zwischen der Gemäldegalerie der Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien und der Ars Electronica.
Die hohe Auflösung des Bildes offenbart die kleinsten Details dieses 500 Jahre alten Gemäldes, die auf dem Original mit bloßem Auge kaum zu erkennen sind.
