After a long period on loan to the Vienna Technical Museum, the Diskophorus is now back at the Plaster Cast Collection! Academy of Fine Arts Vienna

The Discophoros, also spelled Discophorus(Greek – „Discus-Bearer“), was a bronze sculpture by the classical Greek sculptor Polykleitos in the second quarter of the 5th century BC . The statue of an athlete is known today through many Roman marble copies. It is not to be confused with Discobolus of Myron, which shows a discus being thrown, not carried.

It’s ! 🥁

On this pencil and watercolour sketch the artist Thomas Ender captured „Sailors playing Music on Board the Frigate Austria“. This piece is one of 700 drawings and aquarelles that Ender created in the year 1817 when taking part at the Austrian Brasilian expedition.

🛳 Special invitation to embark on an artsy journey 🛤

On Wednesday we will take off and dive into the Graphic Collection of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. It preserves more than 100,000 drawings, prints and photographs from various periods of art history. As these works of art are very sensitive to light they are rarely seen in public and usually kept in storage.  
But on special occasions you are invited to take a look at its holdings on a guided study hall tour! And on Wednesday, just in time for the start of the summer holiday season, we are focusing on artists’ journeys: 
🎨 Artists on the Road Guided tour (in German) in the study hall of the Graphic Collection
Wed 24.6., 4 pm  Duration: approx. 1 hour 
This tour offers you the chance to see representative graphic works from various centuries, created during journeys that often served educational and academic purposes. The selection ranges from late medieval Gothic architectural drawings, masterpieces by Albrecht Dürer and Hendrick Goltzius and examples of the 18th-century fascination with Italy, such as those by Michael Wutky and Joseph Anton Koch. The 19th and 20th centuries are represented by works by Rudolf von Alt, Theophil von Hansen, Thomas Ender and Ernst Anton Plischke.

About the Lecture (held in German):
In her series of tapestries “The Day You Were Thinking About the Sibyl While You Were Picking Autumn Leaves“ (2020–2025), Ana Torfs (*1963) draws parallels between her personal experience of the COVID-19 pandemic and the ancient Sibylline prophecies.

The lecture examines how the Belgian artist links elements of mythical dystopia with the current ecological crisis. Our attention is drawn to literary references – to Mary Shelley (1797–1851) and Charles Dickens (1812–1870). In doing so, political aspects are explored through the interplay of verbal and visual modes of transmission and translation.

Hanne Loreck, Dr. phil., studied Visual Communication, Art History, Philosophy and German Studies, and has been Professor of Art and Cultural Studies and Gender Studies at the University of Fine Arts, Hamburg since 2004; she served as its Vice-President from 2006 to 2019. She publishes on contemporary art movements, 20th-century art and media history, fashion phenomena and cultural theory, with a focus on subject theory and questions of visibility, imagery and surfaces. „Camouflage: Zur Kunst- und Kulturgeschichte des Tarnens is due to be published shortly.“

The afternoon opening of the Plaster Cast Collection is an offer to all those who want to deal intensively with drawing.

✍️ Join us tomorrow from 2 pm to 5 pm!

Please bring your own pens, paper and, if necessary, easel. No instructions needed – just let the works of art inspire you!

The collection of about 450 historical plaster casts can be regarded as unique in Vienna. The purism of the form of plaster casts and the impressive objects offer an inexhaustible pool of motifs – a source of inspiration to revitalise the artistic expression of drawing!
This revives a proven academic tradition. Drawing after antiquity was an integral part of art education at the academy until the beginning of the 20th century.

 Focusing on Jan van den Hoecke’s Sibyl cycles, this lecture explores the origins, meaning, and formal articulation of its iconography as developed by the artist. Drawing on a range of literary and visual sources, it examines how the prophetic figure of the Sibyl was constructed, transformed, and given renewed resonance within the Flemish Baroque imagination. 
Lecture in English 
Jahel Sanzsalazar is an art historian, researcher, and curator specializing in late sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Flemish painting. Her scholarship has significantly advanced the study of artists of that school, including, among others, Peter Paul Rubens, Anthony van Dyck, Michaelina Wautier, and Jan van den Hoecke, with particular attention to his remarkable representations of the Sibyls.

The „Portrait of a Young Woman“ by Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn recently traveled from to . This masterpiece from the Art Collections of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna will be on view in the new exhibition from tomorrow on:  Rembrandt 1632 Creation of a Brand 8.5. to 9.8.2026 Exhibition at Wilhelmshöhe Palace

About the exhibition: Rembrandt is one of the most extensively researched artists of the 17th century. But some aspects of his work remain in the dark. The period around 1632 is characterized by stylistic and biographical changes: Rembrandt moved from Leiden to Amsterdam and joined the workshop of Hendrick Uylenburgh. A significant number of individual and group portraits were created here. New circles of buyers were tapped into. Rembrandt experimented with different stylistic devices, searching for suitable forms of expression.

The exhibition takes a focused look at the works from the year 1632 and explores the development towards variants and copies in order to examine various stylistic features, workshop techniques, and the function of individual paintings more closely.

Soziale Medien zeigen oft ein verzerrtes Bild von Schönheit – perfekt, gefiltert und weit entfernt von der Realität. Die Initiative „YOUareART – Ungefiltert schön“ thematisiert den Einfluss von Social Media und digitalen Beauty-Filtern auf Körperbild, Selbstbild und die psychische Gesundheit junger Menschen.

Setze ein Zeichen!
In der Gemäldegalerie findest du bei vier Kunstwerken einen QR-Code, mit dem du mittels einer AR-App die dargestellten Menschen "schön" filtern kannst. Was macht das mit dem Original? Teile deine Fotos oder kreativen Beiträge und Gedanken zu einem positiven, selbstbestimmten Körperbild unter dem Hashtag !

Im Zentrum der Initiative „YOUareART – Ungefiltert schön“ stehen Workshops in Museen. Hier setzen sich junge Menschen gemeinsam mit Psycholog_innen und Kunstvermittler_innen mit historischen und aktuellen Schönheitsidealen auseinander und reflektieren deren Wirkung auf ihre eigene Lebensrealität. Dabei ist Raum für offene Gespräche und kreative Gestaltungen. Die Workshops werden bereits seit einigen Monaten in der Gemäldegalerie der Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien und in der Heidi Horten Collection erfolgreich umgesetzt: Das Interesse an den Workshops ist groß und die Teilnehmer*innen sind begeistert. Die Initiative wird zusätzlich aus Mitteln der Agenda Gesundheitsförderung und des Fonds Gesundes Österreich finanziert.
