170 YEARS OLD.
In 1855 the cornerstone was laid and in 1856 construction of De Oude Kerk was finished, serving the community as a church, and the beginning of a long relationship with what became Riebeek Kasteel.
When the new church was completed in 1915 De Oude Kerk was used as a church hall until 1940, whereafter it became a store for a local building company. It eventually came into the possession of Piet ’Spiere’ du Toit of Kloovenburg, who in 1989 donated it to the community as a museum for posterity.
The name was eventually altered because of De Oude Kerk Museum in Tulbagh, which caused confusion for visitors to the region.

The issue of vagrants at the museum continues. Speaking to them they become very confrontational and on one occasion quite violent. They leave a substantial amount of mess around the site. The matter has been reported to Swartland Municipality who own the building, the police and the security company, Dogs and All. None of them have reacted.
