Meet Linda Rademan, the second participant in the “Between the Lines” Exhibition opening at Gallery1903 tomorrow morning.

Linda spent 28 years as an art director in advertising and nine years teaching art direction at the AAA School of Advertising. She holds a master’s degree (cum laude) in Fine Arts from the University of Johannesburg, where she was awarded the Chancellor’s Medal.

Her work explores gender politics, memory and female identity. A recurring metaphoric seam—evoking suturing—runs through it. This can be read both as marking a site of difference and as a site of reconciliation, used to question, subvert and deconstruct prevailing stereotypes.

Ambivalence is the golden thread in this body of work: the pieces can generally be read as either “fraying” or “in progress”.

The sparrow is a recurring icon of hope, drawn from the life of Anette Marais, a woman interned in the Bethulie concentration camp during the Second Boer War. Marais regularly read Matthew 10:29–30 to fellow prisoners:

“Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.”

Legend has it that a sparrow landed on her shoulder during one reading. When General Smuts heard of her faith and resilience, he is said to have requested that two sparrows appear on the coin of least value in South African currency at that time —a quarter cent piece.

For Linda, this symbolism is telling: the women were never truly revered, but instead marked by their silence and their omission from twentieth century Afrikaner historiography—a pattern reflected in inheritance customs, where farm land passed to sons and daughters received trousseau kists.

EXHIBITING AT "BETWEEN THE LINES" WITH LINDA RADEMAN OPENING THIS SATURDAY

Allison Klein is a Johannesburg based artist who studied Fine Art at Wits Technicon and majored in printmaking.

She lectured in printmaking and drawing at the Parktown College and has worked in many creative fields including mural art, illustration and storyboarding for film and advertising.

Her love of experimentation has brought her back to printmaking as her chosen medium.

She is often led by the chance element of the process which she enjoys mixing and layering. Over the past 10 years her work has been included in group shows, art fairs and Duo exhibitions. She is an active member of The Printing Girls and formed part of their leadership as gallery liaison and graphic designer. Here she developed strong curatorial and collaborative skills.

In her work, she attempts to find meaning in a world filled with conflicting messages. She uses collage and printmaking to explore the layered chaos of modern meaning/making. Her work draws on Renaissance iconography, punk aesthetics, and the visual language of urban surfaces. She combines cyanotype, spray paint, and traditional print techniques to create artifacts that feel both ancient and immediate.

Alison is interested in the masks we wear, the protective devices we construct, and the spiritual confusion of navigating a world guided by algorithms, social constructs, and fading belief systems.

Her process is intentionally layered with each technique adding its own voice. Linocuts, etchings, screenprints, and cyanotype are orchestrated into a chorus that hums with the tension between order and chaos, meaning and mystery

Meet Dominique Otto, some works currently available at Gallery1903
“Each Animal calls to be brought to life on my paper”

Dominique Otto is a self-taught, multi-talented creative from Cape Town. She describes her work as Folk or Outsider Art. From a young age she was drawn to music — old timey blues and folk — and played in bands in South Africa’s punk scene from the age of 14.

Dominique was drawn into tattooing when it was still regarded as an underground movement. She worked in tattoo parlours from her late teens and started tattooing professionally in 2014.

A year later she moved to New York and lived and worked in the United States for the next eight years. She tattooed her way through the country, spending time in Los Angeles, New York, North Carolina and Nebraska, fell in love in New Orleans, and lived and learned from like-minded American musicians and artists in Nashville before returning to Cape Town.

While in New York she played in a band called Earnheart, a Southern Rock, alt-country outfit with open road melodies, and recorded a self-titled album in Omaha.

After 10 years of tattooing, Dominique decided to focus on painting full time. She sees her creations as Low Brow Art and works on a large scale.

Her mother was initiated with traditional healers in the Eastern Cape while Dominique was in her teens, a formative experience that deepened her spiritual connection to nature, symbolism and archetype.

Her work draws on nature, animal language, the depth and simplicity of the blues, the raw honesty of punk, the lyricism of folk, the power of traditional tattoos, and spiritual dualities. She addresses modern hardships in a direct way that resonate in the subconscious and soul which imbue her work with an old-world feel.

In a relatively short period, her work has become highly sought after. Her creations are included in private collections in Tanzania, Morocco, New Mexico and Switzerland.

She participated in “Art of Survival”, hosted by the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation in the Cotswolds earlier this year.

Dominique, currently based in Cape Town, collaborates with Caroline Gibello Fine Art Photography on occasion.
