Before Eyethu Heritage Hall, there was this…

Our founders, EB & CK. Partners in marriage and business started with £20 and a butchery license, selling meat by bicycle in Emasakeni, Soweto.

From there, a butchery became a supermarket. A supermarket became a Shell filling station, soon the top-selling Shell outlet in all of Sub-Saharan Africa. Then a car dealership, bottle stores, fish and chip outlets, dry-cleaning depots in both Soweto & Eswatini.

And then, Eyethu Cinema. The cinema doors have closed, but Eyethu Heritage Hall now stands right where it used to be, carrying the story forward.

This is where we come from. This is Eyethu Heritage Hall. 🧡🖤

We are so proud to announce that our Executive Director & Head of Film, Batana Vundla, has been selected as a Yale Directors Forum 2026 Fellow!

One of only 12 cultural heritage leaders from Africa, the Caribbean & Latin America chosen for this prestigious 12-month Yale Directors Forum fellowship program.

This is not just a personal milestone, it is a recognition of the work we do every day at EHH and a testament to the power of African stories and heritage on the world stage.

Did You Know? 1976 is a year that lives in our collective memory. A year of courage, sacrifice and turning points.

But Soweto in 1976 had more than one story to tell. Even then, through everything, Soweto has always been ahead of its time.
In January 1976, Eyethu Cinema and Orlando Stadium hosted the legendary The Staple Singers. 1,000 fans at the airport at 3am. Sold out shows. A JET Magazine cover.

But here’s what makes this story even richer. We believe the legendary Mama Margaret Singana, then a girl from Queenstown, first discovered singing while working as a domestic worker, may have opened the show.

6 editions of Eyethu Franco Xchange, where Francophone Africa meets Soweto, through storytelling, conversation, and everything in between…

Season 1 was never just screenings. it was culture crossing, languages blending, african communities finding each other the way we were always meant to.

We give thanks to every soul in our community who walked through the doors, pulled up a chair, and made this space what it has become. You are the heartbeat of this thing.
