Join us this Saturday 27 June 2026 at 12:00 for a walkabout led by the artist, Theresa-Anne Mackintosh, offering insight into her creative process, the development of her fictional bodies, and the dynamic dialogue between painting and sculpture.

NOW IS NOT FOREVER marks the first comprehensive institutional survey of Mackintosh’s practice.The exhibition brings together sculpture, painting, and archival material spanning more than three decades, focusing on her exploration of the human figure and psychological states through form. Central works include the iconic Tina figures, fibreglass effigies, ceramic baby sculptures, and new bronze and steel sculptures.

Free parking for the walkabout is available in the garage beneath the museum.

Thank you to everyone who braved the cold and joined us for a morning of creativity, conversation and making inspired by the exhibition 1976 at 50. It was wonderful to see families exploring the exhibition together before creating their own artworks.

The workshop also marked the closing of '1976 at 50'. Thank you to everyone who visited the exhibition over the past months and helped make it such a meaningful space for reflection and dialogue.

Making marks, lines and textures:

Don't forget to bring the whole family to the Free Family Make-and-Create workshop at WAM this Saturday 20 June 2026 from 11:30 to 13:00. This is the last opportunity to view ‘1976 at 50’, which marks the 50th anniversary of the Soweto uprising. Free parking is available in the garage beneath the museum. From the garage take the lift or stairs to the Ground floor foyer.

Inspired by the '1976 at 50' exhibition, this workshop will explore ideas of contrast, presence, and absence, and look at how photography can hold memory, tell stories, and show different perspectives on history.

Led by experienced WAM docents Pam and Elona, families will be guided through the exhibition before moving into the making session. Using chalk, pastel, white correction fluid and other white materials on black paper, participants will experiment with how images can emerge through light and shadow.

Together, you will create drawings inspired by what you have seen and discussed, exploring how marks, texture, and layering can express feeling, memory, or story. Each work becomes a personal response to history and the act of seeing.

This hands-on workshop is suitable for kids, teens and families. No experience is needed, only curiosity and imagination.

The workshop will take place in the WAM Café / Gallery Forecourt area.

All materials are provided.

No booking is required and entrance is free. We can’t wait to see you there!

New exhibition at WAM

After de Jongh
Hentie van der Merwe

Join WAM for the opening of ‘Hentie van der Merwe: After de Jongh’ on Wednesday 1 July 2026 @ 18:00 for 18:30. The event will be opened by poet and arts writer Johan Myburg. Free parking for the exhibition is available in the garage beneath the museum. From the garage take the lift or stairs to the Ground floor foyer.

This exhibition explores the artist's relationship with personal identity, cultural inheritance, and the enduring presence of history through painting. Drawing inspiration from Bloekomlaan (Avenue of Gum Trees) by the Dutch-born South African painter Tinus de Jongh (1885 – 1942), Hentie van der Merwe revisits an image deeply embedded in Afrikaner visual culture and collective memory.

Museum hours: Tuesday – Saturday, 10:00 – 16:00
