In conversation at WAM
'What We Do Not See'

Join WAM this Saturday 05 September 2026 at 12:00 for a walkabout of 'What We Do Not See'. Curators Brenda Goldblatt and Fiona Rankin-Smith will be in conversation with participating photographers Lindokuhle Sobekwa, Madoda Makhobeni, Sabelo Mlangeni and Tshepiso Mazibuko, who will share reflections on their work and offer insights into the exhibition.

'What We Do Not See' is an exhibition that remembers David Goldblatt in what would have been his 95th year, and explores the idea of home - the structures, places, cultures and relationships that we live within – in and around Johannesburg. In addition to those mentioned above, the work of Gulshan Khan, Jabulani Dhlamini, Jo Ractliffe, Jodi Bieber and Mark Lewis is on display.

Free parking for the walkabout is available in the garage beneath the Museum.

In this walkabout, the artist will reflect on the development of the exhibition, sharing insights into the ideas, processes and lines of inquiry that informed his practice. See, imagine, create inspired by the Education Resource

Don't forget to bring the whole family to the Free Family Make-and-Create Workshop at WAM tomorrow, Saturday 22 August 2026, from 11:30 to 13:00. Free parking for the workshop is available in the garage beneath the museum. From the garage, take the lift or stairs to the Ground Floor foyer.

Inspired by the exhibition 'What We Do Not See', experienced WAM docent Elona and WAM Education Curator Bougaard will guide families through an interactive walkabout of the exhibition. Families will discover their favourite artworks, explore ideas and activities from the exhibition’s education resource, and then create their own artwork inspired by the photographs on display. Each family will also receive a special education booklet to take home and continue exploring together.

This hands-on workshop is suitable for kids, teens and families. No experience is needed, only curiosity and imagination.

The workshop will take place in the WAM Café / Gallery Forecourt area.

All materials are provided.

No booking is required and entrance is free. We can’t wait to see you there!
