Constitution Hill (South Africa)

Constitution Hill (South Africa) As part of the Nelson Mandela Legacy Sites, ConHill, is a museum & part of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites.
(1064)

The site of the notorious Old Fort prison, Number 4 prison, Womens Gaol, & the home of the Constitutional Court of South Africa. Nowhere can the story of South Africa's turbulent past and its extraordinary transition to democracy be told as it is at Constitution Hill. Constitution Hill is a national heritage site situated in the Johannesburg CBD and is home to the Constitutional Court of South Afr

ica– the highest court in the country on constitutional matters. Once a place of injustice and brutality, where South Africa’s leading political activists, including Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi, were detained, the site has been transformed into a place of solidarity and democracy, home to the Women’s Gaol museum, Number Four Museum, and Old Fort Museum. Apart from its engaging and gripping exhibitions, Constitution Hill is also open to the public for guided tours and has become an important platform for Heritage, Education, and Tourism related programmes. The vast variety of programmes hosted at Constitution Hill enable us to embrace current issues, celebrate days of national significance, address matters of public interest and create a forum for public debate. With its rich history and character Constitution Hill boasts of ideal platforms to educate and learn about South Africa's story. ConHill, as it is famously known, also offers a variety of multipurpose venues, suitable for conferencing, performances, a large array of events and for public activities and programmes.

As August comes to an end, we reflect on the incredible women who shape our history, arts, and creative culture—including the late cultural champion, Maria McCloy. ConHill remains committed to providing a platform for women's stories, heritage, and voices.

Activist. Medical doctor. Academic. Business leader. Global thought leader.

Dr. Mamphela Ramphele is a force for change.

As co-founder of ReimagineSA and Chair of the Tutu IP Trust, her impact continues to shape South Africa’s future. From 2018 to 2023, she served as Co-President of The Club of Rome, driving global dialogue on sustainability and social justice.

Rooted in the philosophy of Black Consciousness, Dr. Ramphele helped ignite a powerful self-liberation movement in the 1970s—empowering a generation to rise above racial oppression and reclaim their dignity. Her leadership helped reignite the liberation struggle, paving the way for South Africa’s political freedom in 1994.

We salute her unwavering courage and extraordinary contributions.

We had the true honour of hosting the Women in the Liberation Struggle: Playing History Forward live activation at Constitution Hill, commemorating 70 years since the historic 1956 Women’s March. Presented by South African author and game developer Khethiwe Zulu, this groundbreaking experience reimagines how we engage with iconic heritage narratives through interactive gameplay—bridging history, technology, and storytelling.

Here is a look at how the activation unfolded at ConHill!

We are honoured to celebrate the legacy of truly iconic women who have left an indelible mark on South African history and the world.

One such woman is Zindziswa Mandela — remembered not only as the daughter of struggle icons, but as a formidable force in her own right.

Her life was filled with powerful moments, none more iconic than the speech she delivered at Soweto’s Jabulani Stadium in February 1985. There, she boldly read Nelson Mandela’s rejection of President PW Botha’s conditional offer of release — a defining moment in the fight for justice.

Zindzi will also be remembered for her fearless activism in anti-apartheid underground movements and her later contributions as South Africa’s Ambassador to Denmark from 2015 to 2020.

Her legacy continues to inspire.
