Until a painting leaves my studio, it is never entirely finished. And if it returns to the studio, it becomes open game again.

I painted these two portraits some time ago, and I loved them as they were. But when they came back into the studio, I felt it was time to take them somewhere new.

The faces remained at the heart of each work, while the colour, atmosphere and energy changed completely—one now set against electric blue, the other against vivid magenta.

The Both will be exhibited at Art in the Country Coastal at Collisheen Estate, Ballito, from 1–4 October.

The tulip that gave the Munro name its meaning 🌷

From Munro:

“When God gave me the name Munro, the tulip was the first image He gave me to paint under that name. It became the beginning of the story.

I painted those early tulips singly and often as pairs—one bending one way and its companion bending the other. They were deliberately simple and recognisable, and they became the image through which the Munro name was established.

Over the years, more than 1,000 different Munro tulips have found their way into homes and collections. My work has travelled far beyond the tulip, but I return to it again and again. It remains a familiar thread connecting the beginning to the present.”

These two new red tulips return to where it all began.

This September, we’ll be sharing a selection of his recent work and looking back at some of the paintings and moments that have shaped his journey.

We look forward to presenting his latest works at Art in the Country Coastal in Ballito, from 30 September to 4 October.

They are forged.

Built through heat, pressure, memory, survival and becoming.

This work carries the feeling of a soul tempered by life — scarred, luminous, unbroken. The drips remain visible like traces of time itself, refusing perfection and choosing truth instead.
