Nobles County Minnesota Historical Society Nonprofit organization devoted to preserving and interpreting the artifacts and history of Nobles Co

The Nobles County Historical Society is now located in the historic 100-year-old Worthington Armory building. Its mission is to collect, preserve, exhibit and interpret the history of Nobles County MNand its people. In fulfilling its mission, the society collects documents, manuscripts, photographs and three-dimensional objects, including those from contiguous areas that interact with the county.

The Society also operates a Pioneer Village typical of small communities in the Midwest at the beginning of the 20th Century.

THROWBACK THURSDAY!

I'm guessing there are a few alumni of Hi-Ho Nursery School in the audience. The photo and advertisement here are from August of 1964, when the preschool got its start. Amazingly, the enterprise still exists today!

TUESDAY TREASURES!

It is September 1, and that means King Turkey Day is fast approaching. We have put together a small display of King Turkey Day photos and memorabilia in the research room at the Nobles County Heritage Center, 225 Ninth St. We hope you will stop by and check it out.

This medal is one of the things on display. It is from the 25th running of the Turkey Day 10K in 2004. Actually, it's one of many medals just like it on display, as we have a whole box of them -- many more than we need to save in the NCHS archives.

So, you deserve a medal. If you dreamed of running in the 10K but never got in shape for it, or if you'd like one to round out your KTD memorabilia collection, stop by the Heritage Center and pick one up.

Oh, and you can grab a parking token while you are at it. Downtown Worthington no longer has parking meters, but we've got a whole bunch of parking tokens that, like the medals, are surplus goods. We'd love to give you one, or two, three, or four. They are very small, after all.

SEASONAL SATURDAY!

It's Minnesota State Fair time! Who's going?

You might not guess that these photos are from the Minnesota State Fair, but that's what we're interpreting from information posted on the back. The first one says: "Visitors from Worthington to our camp at State Fairgrounds St. Paul 1898."

The second photo identifies the men as John Peppee and John Rogers, 1898, at Como Park or State Fairgrounds.

I don't know about you, but these photos spark the imagination about what the state fair would have been like in 1898, and exactly what the visitors from Worthington saw and did there.

Both these photos were labeled "Found in Collection," so we don't even know the source.
